Slayers might just be the show that's been in my backlog the longest.  At least now I've seen the opening.

Also, here's the best ending of 2 anime seasons straight. Who'd ever have thought there'd be a slice of life Gundam show. Especially one where the main protag falls in love with his sister.

You could skip to 08th ms team if you really wanted to.
It's 12 episodes. Set in the one year war, so you don't need to have finished 0079.

I've been meaning to get around to Planetes. Since I really enjoy the creators other work Vinland Saga. I've only heard good things about it too

I need to get back into Vinland sometime
It's really low key sci-fi , which is a nice break from things like Gundam or Patlabor.
