whyse everyone here got poor eyesight? is it cause of staring at computer screens for 12 hours a day? i think i should probably sit farther from the screen but then i wouldn't be able to read anything

This would explain it. As a kid I would squint to read at night.

I was far-sighted as a kid and had glasses, but it went away in my early teens

My dad had to wear very thick glasses due to his eyesight.

He never wore them. He bought them, decided they were too much of a bother and threw them away.

My eyesight is still ok but I think I'll end up with glasses when I hit 30.

Looking at a screen doesn't cause near-nearsightedness, it's genetic

I wear glasses too but I feel like I need to get myself contacts as well
Hopefully I'll eventually be able to afford lasik

Why do glasses people always end up being fucking NERDS then?

I read something about that several years ago (might've been on NewScientist).

Supposedly near sighted and similarly visually impaired babies tend to focus on what is nearby, and spend more time observing it.

As they grow they come to have a preference to be analytical and more focused, which is pretty much a requirement to be a nerd since you spend so much more time thinking about stuff normal people don't and grow attached to it.

Could just be bs, but it sounds plausible.

The way my optometrist explained it, focusing on things that are too close weakens your eyes.

He basically said that I shouldn't be able to touch my screen with my arm without leaning foreward. Same with a book, my phone, etc.

I know I didn't need glasses before I was 16, so...

It's partially genetic but exposure to bright light at young age (which nerds who just go on computer wouldn't have) has been linked to lower rates of myopia. There's a bunch of other explanations of why myopic people are such nerds but not with as good evidence I think.
