i recently saw the master, the latest film from paul thomas anderson. it's my second favorite from him, behind punch drunk love and ahead there will be blood. i'm super excited for his next movie inherent vice which is coming out late this year

also the master has probably the best soundtrack i've ever heard, it's so incredible. jonny greenwood did that one and also there will be blood. if you're interested in seriously watching movies i highly recommend watching paul thomas anderson, he's like the perfect introduction to complex films in an accessible style

PTA is legit one of the best active directors in the world right now.

There Will Be Blood is my favorite of his, though I haven't seen The Master yet mostly because the premise of it didn't immediately interest me. I'm sure it's a dang fine movie though and I will get to it soon enough.

There will be blood was neat. I recently saw Beyond the Black Rainbow and I thought it was really neat.  :heh: I need to watch more Ingmar Bergman films....I've got like 5 downloaded and only watched 1.....   :damn:

yeah, the master definitely seems slightly more mundane than twbb. it's less of an epic and more of a character study, but the plot is definitely interesting, and there's more than enough weirdness going on to keep me engaged. plus philip seymour hoffman and joaquin phoenix playing off eachother is a beautiful, beautiful thing. some of the best acting of their careers, easy

Just bought Amazing Spiderman 2: best spiderman film made.
Also, so Guardians of the Galaxy a while back, it's my favorite movie of 2014 so far.
Saw The Giver, it was better than anticipated but still falls a bit short from the book.

If anyone wants to watch a couple action flicks with good action but meh tier stories you don't really need to pay attention to, I recommend...

KAMEN RIDER, THE FIRST AND THE NEXT!

Yes indeed, there does exist Kamen Rider movies not made for kids and with little intention of selling toys.

These are re imaginings of the original three Kamen Riders (1, 2, and V3) and require no knowledge or previous Rider experience.

Meh tier music video very related.

Title: Re: movie thread
Post by: Ming on December 09, 2014, 09:07:22 PM
Just got back.

The movie was a bit disappointing. It did have its moments, but overall it felt very drawn out, like they cut out the ending of the second movie and tried to make it last 2 and a half hours. Other elements on the other hand felt very sudden and like they came out of nowhere. I suspect the 'extended' version will remedy that though in time.

A bit much forced romance sub plot and other cheese for my taste. There were lots of lines mimicking those of characters in the first trilogy too, but I didn't mind that.

The action, effects, music, all that good stuff was amazing, as you'd expect (though CGI orcs still annoy the hell out of me).

I don't feel like this was what I wanted or expected, but I don't dislike it. It's a good movie. Just not what the little me who grew up on the book dreamt about (I can say that about the previous two movies as well).

I give it... 7.5 out of 10. Might make a full 8 come extended version. (I'd rate the other Hobbit movies 8.5, and the original trilogy 10)

Edit: Oh I know what it was that I wanted to say. The LotR 'magic' wasn't in it. It's more "action flick with cheesy humour".

Bringing this thread back. :sparkle:

I watched The Act of Killing today.

Basically it's a documentary in which they take Anwar Congo, one of executioners in the Indonesian communist massacre of the 60's that resulted in over half a million deaths, and they give him the means to re-enact his genocide in the form of a Hollywood film. At the start of filming, whenever he visits a place where he once executed people he casually talks about the horrific ways in which he killed them there like it was nothing, and even laughs about it at times. But by the time he completes the film re-enacting his actions, he's so moved by it that he starts to seriously question the things he's done, and now whenever he visits a place in which he tortured people it causes him to vomit in reaction. Fascinating stuff, really makes you think about the power film can have as a medium.

Just finished watching the backer premiere of Tales of Alethrion, a 20~ minute animated short about a monster hunter . Pretty damn good, first (and only) movie I've backed on Kickstarter. It was delayed a year, but in return it was twice as long so I'm not mad.

Nice hearty animation (though I wish there were a few more in-between frames, but the budget was super tiny so I get why) and I really like the sound direction. The storytelling is great, a bit less intense than their previous work, The Reward, but it was fine as this time around it was romance rather than bromance which was at the heart of the tale.

Highly recommend people who haven't seen The Reward to check it out by the way, if you're a fan of adventure. Know I've linked it before but whatevs.

Not a valid vimeo URL

I'll link Alethrion, which serves as a prequel, once it goes public as well.

Anyway, on the subject of Kickstarter... paying and then waiting 2 years to watch something which provides 20 minutes of entertainment feels stupid in hindsight (+2 minutes if you count searching for my name in the credits as entertainment). Really wish animation wasn't so expensive to produce, both terms of cash money and time.

At least I didn't back Little Witch Academia 2. Wasn't that kickstarter nearly 2 years ago now? And I hear production only started a few months ago.  :owo:

Saw Age of Ultron last night.

It was pretty good, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and The Vision were pretty cool. Ultron was pretty cool when Whedon wasn't Whedoning all over his dialogue, the movie still doesn't feel quite as epic as it should, a lot of things aren't given the screen time they deserve, and a lot more are clearly setups for the future character films.

But hey, it was fun.

I wouldn't compare them too much. It's its own thing. It does have the same "feel" and keeps the mad max aesthetics pretty alive, but less "homoerotic biker gang" and more "crazy wasteland albino cult". All in all it's a great new entry in the series and I'm super glad Mad Max is getting the love it deserves and is relevant again.

Never had anchovies, pretty sure most places here don't even offer them. They're salty, right? Might be tasty with some chunks of feta, sundried tomatoes, and maybe some bacon for savoury flavor on a bed of mild cheese.

Yeah, they're like mini sardines more or less, except less fishy. They basically taste like salt with a hint of fish.

Cause it's made by the same people and he wanted to continue his film in the universe he already setup.

Plus Mad Max is cool so fuck you.
Title: Re: movie thread
Post by: a worthless person on July 25, 2015, 06:39:39 PM
Please explain your opinion

It's a well made movie with cool effects.

But it is completely disconnected from old Mad Max movies.

When is it supposed to take place? After 1 and before 2? After 2 and before 3? After 3? None of those line up whatsoever.

Why do they have so many guns? In Mad Max 2, 2 people had guns. Max had a sawn-off shotgun that misfired, and some other guy had a revolver.

Who the fuck is the little girl Max sees? Someone told me they thought it was Max's dead daughter, but the problem is, Max never had a daughter. In Mad Max 1, he had a wife and a young infant son. Someone else thought it might be one of the kids from Mad Max 3, but Fury Road taking place after 3 doesn't make any fucking sense, because Mad Max doesn't have his Pursuit Special in 3, it gets destroyed in 2.

If it's not supposed to be canon, or isn't supposed to be connected to the old films..

WHY WOULD YOU HAVE THE PURSUIT SPECIAL, THE COOLEST FUCKING CAR IN THE GODDAMN UNIVERSE, GET DESTROYED IN THE FIRST 10 FUCKING MINUTES????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Also I don't like Mad Max being played by someone that isn't mel gibson, and it feels like they tried to hard to make Furiosa the main character. If that's what they wanted, why add Mad Max as a character at all.

Also for some reason everyone has fucking 40k names now? Imperator Furiosa? Immortan Joe?
Not that they are bad names, but it's kind of random and out of the blue. They don't really fit the old naming schemes of things like Toecutter, Lord Humongous, and Master-Blaster.

Like I said, it's a really good, well-made movies

But as someone who's a big fan of the originals, I had a hard time enjoying it as much as most people.

And then people like Ollistar say "Cause it's made by the same people and he wanted to continue his film in the universe he already setup."

Which makes no sense as to why it makes no fucking sense in context to the originals.

And yeah, Mad Max is cool. That's why the originals were so good, and why I care so much to begin with on the subject  :poh:

Pretty much. It's a good, well-made film, one of the few in the last few years. I can totally understand people who've never seen/don't care about the old ones really loving Fury Road.

But I have to put it in my "It's okay" column just because everything that isn't the cool action and great effects tick me off.

But I dunno, maybe it's just one of those movies for cinema buffs, and not filthy basement dwelling anime loving dullards like me.

Just got back from a friends house. We watched Gingerdead Man vs. the Evil Bong. Honestly super fucking good. Pretty much what I expected/10.

I was a little worried though since there were 2 or 3 Evil Bong sequels we hadn't seen, but no worries, the movie used obnoxious flash backs to recap literally every Evil Bong AND Gingerdead Man movie before anything particular happens. All in all I highly suggest giving this a watch as well as both series. Literally the cinema equivalent of shitposting.

Title: Re: movie thread

Official review of Krampus:

This movie was golden. It was absolutely everything I'd hoped it would be.

Krampus was a 9/10 black comedy horror film. Plenty of funny, plenty of spooks, good aesthetics and atmosphere.

+Funny jokes
+Spooky spooks
+Very nicely shot
+The costumes/creature design were phenomenal
+Mostly practical effects
+Good blending of what little CG there was
+They did great with Krampus and didn't make him look like shit (which is easy to do)
+Absolutely LOVELY and incredibly well animated CGI scene done in the style of the old Christmas claymation films

-There was something odd with the focus that during a couple panning shots hurt my eyes (but that could totally have just been me)
-When the Austrian grandma is envisioned as a kid she is holding a doll modeled after the American santa not the Austrian Saint Nicholas
-They chose to write it as "Gruss vom Krampus" instead of "Gruß vom Krampus" which I thought was odd and unnecessary

The impossible happened girls

It was fucking great.

Star Wars is saved. 10/10 would watch again. And I can't wait for the next part. I feel like a kid again, and that's the best compliment I could have given a Star Wars movie really.

Comedy was spot on without going overboard. (And nothing like Jar Jar in this time around) Lots of fan service but well executed. Good action. Amazing visuals and sound, definitively feels like a Star Wars movie made in modern times. And I actually liked the characters which is what I was worried about most. They all have good chemistry together.

I think Kylo Ren, the bad guy with the mask, is going to get a lot of criticism but to be honest he was played perfectly for what he is (angsty Darth Vader fan boy). Speaking of Ren, I love the crossguard lightsaber fuck the haters.

Title: Re: movie thread
Post by: Ming on December 21, 2015, 07:39:41 AM
I wonder if it's gonna turn out that Ren is just trying to get close to the SUPREME LEADER so he can kill him. And killing Han was the only way he could truly prove his loyalty. Notice how immediately after the final duel ends SL decides he's going to finalize Ren's training, for one, though that could have just been because he needs more power if he's going to fight Rey again.

Why I'm even considering this idea though is that the whole scene with Han practically screamed that he just wanted to go home. And once he killed Han he snaps and goes after Finn and Rey when he should have escaped the base, almost as if he's blaming them for having made Han appear forcing him to deal with him.

And think about it. He idolizes Vader. What did Vader do? He betrayed the Emperor and killed him to save his son. I seriously doubt Luke wouldn't have told him about how Vader redeemed himself and was once a force for good. Plus, you could argue if he just wanted to admire someone strong, I think both the Emperor and Luke would have been better choices, though all 'power levels' are fairly unknown now with the old EU not being canon anymore.

Probably reading too far into things though.

I took the line "I will finish what you started" to mean that while he idolizes Vader, he wishes to avoid his fall to the light.
Rey will struggle against temptation of the Dark Side. But Ren will struggle against falling to the Light Side.

Yesterday I saw Zootopia with a cute girl and we cuddled. I thought it was freaking great. Not a thing I didn't like. The movie was adorabe, the characters were all cute, it was fun and funny and suspenseful. This was definitely the most "you go girl" movie I've ever seen and they did it really well. It's also pleasant to see such a pro police film these days, we need more of those. It was cleverly written with some good minor twists. There were also lots of little details I found pleasant like she had to jump in the water and right before she slips her phone which had some evidence on it in a little ziplock bag. I laughed, I cried, all in all a very lovely film that I want to go watch again.

tl;dr I want to fuck the rabbit

Travel was done very well. The city itself was fucking great, basically each like temperate zone was a district of the town, so like rain forest district, tundra district, etc. The world felt huge and was really fleshed out for how little they showed. The really did a lot with a little in this film.

My review, copy/pasted from Facebook:

Thoughts on Batman VS Superman:

I seem to say this a lot, which casts my status as a prophet into doubt, but the movie surpassed my low expectations.

All the acting was on point, including the much discussed Batfleck, and my personal point of contention, Gal Godot, most famously cast as that chick who walks in slow motion in the Fast and the Furious movies. A highlight is Jesse Eisenberg as a young, immature, but still ambitious and intelligent Lex Luthor.

That being said, the film has a problem with characterization overall, with Batman's establishment being rushed, Superman's response to the ongoing plot thread of his destructive potential being delegated to mostly a single scene, and most condemingly, the personal and ideological differences between Batman and Superman (ie, the main reason one would create a film called Somebody VS Somebody) being criminally underdeveloped. That said, one of the most critical parts of this arc, ie, the point in which these characters reach common ground, was handled quite well.

Aside from that, I'd give the ever condemning label of "adequate" for the film's plot and cinematography. Being based on established comics, it doesn't do much which hasn't been done before, has bizarre tone and pacing issues (the opening minutes of the film are a series of unrelated "sad" scenes that, placed in succesion, cripple their own emotional impact by the time they've run their course.) In addition, the three ongoing major plots of the film take a considerable amount of time to become intertwined, and there was a surprising lack of action scenes or escalating action. While I'd normally be fully in favor of a film not compromising its storytelling for inane spectacles, the writing on display isn't quite at the level it needs to be to carry the film in this fashion.

Speaking of action scenes, the same, sadly, can be said of the film's cinematography, despite the considerable merit Zack Snyder has displayed at them in the past. While the film mostly avoids Man of Steel's overproduced spectacles, the action scenes are all rather basic and, again, "adequate," barring a few standout exceptions. In addition, the pacing of the film is dragged down by bizzare surreal sequences that add little to the plot, B plots that have middling or inconsequential payoffs, and overall an uneven sense of pace. That aside, the film did manage some well produced moments, and some highlights that suggest greater potential for future films in the DCCU.

Overall, We won't crucify you yet but be better dammit/10

Aliens is fucking amazing Olli, yer gonna love it. It has a lot of tropes that today might be considered cliche, but it executes them all so flawlessly that I can't even care.

Alien 3 is depressing and not very good
Alien 4 is ehhhh okay. Not really special though
Prometheus is one of those "you gave it a good effort, but you fell flat anyway" things.

It's not bad. The story's kind of meh, the on foot combat's a knockoff of Batman's without the stealth, and it suffers from the Ubisoft open world design of dozens and dozens of the exact same thing all over the map, but the vehicle customization and combat is really cool. All I wish is that the cosmetic aspects of your car (body, paint, etc) went deeper.

Fury Road was fucking great. Glad you finally saw it. I thought the game looked really cool but I haven't checked into it since launch.

Also, not sure why everyone hates Alien 3? Resurection looks like it's gunna be some "muh OC' tier bullshit, but I really liked 3. It's not as good as the first 2 and the occasional 90s cgi is pretty bad but I was able to take it at face value and the practical effects were all good. The aesthetics were rad and I think anyone into that 90s cyberpunk sort of vibe would agree. All in all a surprisingly solid film, I'd super suggest it if you liked the first 2 and want some more out of the series. Just don't expect anything quite as good.
Title: Re: movie thread
Post by: McJongJing on April 03, 2016, 05:24:39 PM
Personally I dislike 3 just because it's so fucking depressing. Killing off the characters from Aliens like that felt somewhat inorganic. I still don't even know how the alien got on board the ship in the first place. It just felt cheap and almost cruel to pull the rug out from Ripley after she had earned her happy ending in Alien and Aliens.

Anyone see the Revenant?

holy fucking SHIT was I cold by the end of this movie
Don't watch this shit without 2 pairs of socks yo
I had the heating on, covering under blankets, wearing layers... the directer of this movie is a sadistic little shit that got a boner seeing Leo freeze to death at the end of Titanic and then decided he should make himself more fapworthy material. The entire 3 hours are literally just Leo being cold, freezing in the snow, mud, rain, river, EVERYWHERE just constantly being cold and shivering and losing body warmth

Anyway pretty oscarworthy performance I guess, I don't really know what good acting looks like because I'm too autistic but even I cringed at that acceptance speech  :sing:

basically

1) Seems uninspired

5) Not going to watch it, in theatres or on DVD

I'm watching Clerks. It's very.... Odd...

So far it feels a lot like a high school play. There are some golden moments but also some awkward moments. There a few super good actors and a couple lackluster ones. It's just very odd, not sure how I feel about it yet.

EDIT: Just finished it. My statement still stands. It was interesting to say the least. Had some good moments, the ending was a bit lackluster perhaps. It was like nothing really happened or mattered but all in all it was pretty good.

I'm halfway through Mallrats now. I'm loving it, it's a major improvement from clerks and it's pretty fucking fun. Jason Lee is fucking great, and super young here I didn't even recognize him at first. He's also pretty cute tbh. The writing is a lot better, the actors are better, Jay and Silent Bob's return makes the movie (and they were easily the best part of clerks).

Thoughts on the Warcraft film:

As many problems as the movie had, it was probably the most "for the fans" videogame movie I've ever seen.

This, despite the fact that a lot of the plot was changed in between the games and film, although that's mostly in the ending, so I won't go into much detail there.

I'd imagine the film might've been a lot harder to follow if I didn't already know the general plot, which is probably a problem.

Speaking of problems, I'd heard something like 45 minutes of the film were cut, and it definitely shows in places, most notably in Medivh's character arc.

Overall, for the fans/10

This is a good documentary
It's about a very low income Japanese couple that struggle to survive. It's like a little drama but it's real.

Saw Power Rangers.

It was much better than I was expecting.

Which is to say, it was ok.

Had a lot more teen drama, underage crime, and cow jerking off than one would expect.

Also, it had this:

And I appreciate that, because these dudes are super underrated.

I saw Star Wars!

It was alright. It wasn't bad, but it didn't feel like the most anticipated movie of the year. Definitively entertaining though.

it ruined the legacy of Luke Skywalker and showed how they had no real plans for things after TFA.

Also it totally dumpstered suspension of disbelief in Star War's Space combat.

Who needs Space WW2 naval and dogfighting when you can just hook a hyperspace drive to a rock and have a droid pilot it into a fleet of star destroyers and kill all 15 of them?

how does it make sense for them to have no plans for after TFA, they had three movies planned from the start

I thought TLJ was pure Star Wars
Like "hey kids wanna see a really cool Star Wars movie? Well here it is!"

Because the director, Rian Johnson, said so.

Also because each of the three is going to have their own director.

Honestly i'm not going to go into it too much but i'm ashamed so many princessii are plebs  :poh:

It was cool, with the exception of what they did to Luke, or specifically, having someone who risked his life to give DARTH VADER a second chance, yet now his initial instinct upon seeing a kid turn into an edgelord (who still hasn't done anything) is to visit him in the middle of the night with his lightsaber out. And Leia using the force to float through space looked ridiculous.

But I really liked the Kylo x Rey plot. Poe getting screen time. The Snoke twist. Luke "tanking" the AT-ATs barrage. Seeing Yoda again / confirming force ghosts are being kept in the new stories.

Nitpicks would be said Hyperdrive shenanigans and... "Hugs"

But boy oh boy was Kylo cool. Best part of the new trilogy. Wish he'd kept the helmet but oh well

I think Rey became way more interesting in ep8 because you can see she's got some darkside potential. Kylo is still the coolest and most interesting character

Jumanji was a really good movie amd deserved all the money it's made.

I watched the Mummy (2017) at 3am and it was okay

Hollywood needs to make more monster girl movies (hopefully next time said girl could win, because why else would we watch the movie like hello?)

The new mummy was cool! I liked how much tom cruises character was destabilized. It made for a satisfying ending to an otherwise standard/by the numbers blockbuster.

I think mummies are a cool and underrated monster, and people should utilize them more in fiction :sing:

What monster girl do you want in a movie?

^there is a pretty decent comparison here even.

TLJ was mary sue and deus ex machina riddled and its pretty visuals were by no means sufficient for saving it. I was honestly pretty bored with this one. Also that first scene displayed a complete lack of understanding of space combat or even basic physics and I hated it so much.

I can't wait for this Solo movie to happen cause it's our last chance for the fanboys to understand that Star Wars was never that great and even the originals were just pretty okay.

(I'm obviously not saying you can't like star wars but damn there are some obnoxious fanboys defending a tad too much)

Star Wars was a trilogy of really well executed science fantasy movies
What is it about them that makes people go out and get star wars tattoos and shit
Title: Re: movie thread
Post by: Ming on January 11, 2018, 09:08:59 AM
Star Wars is a replacement culture, that's why. People feel an overwhelming need to show off that they like it in hopes of attracting other people who do, so they can experience bonding over something, and being apart of a group.

So they decorate all their rooms with star wars goodies, dress themselves in star wars clothing, and go to tumblr to partake of the sacred, most holiest, star wars memes and fan fiction.

So sad. So sad.

Star Wars

Why
The OT was really well executed. It was a fun scifi adventure with cool characters, good pacing, a great setting, good directing, amazing special effects for the time and some good setups and payoffs.
It was well executed.

lucas went huge on the worldbuilding in the precuels and and a ton of people hated them  :tears:
I really liked how the precuels were all about showing this huge sprawling galaxy full of different colorful characters and things happening all over the place at the same time but I also like how the new movies take place inside a bottle and with minimalist casts

I really liked the Kylo x Rey plot.

For a second I thought the two of them would be like "FUCK THIS PLOT, FUCK ALL THIS BACKSTORY, FUCK THIS FRANCHISE, FUCK EVERYTHING" and then kill everyone and rule the galaxy together, that'd have been sweet.
