I just started playing Dark Souls for the first time too.
I'm enjoying it a lot, but I think that the checkpoint placement is bullshit.

Hey I'm _ok at the game
Maybe I'm just a shitter, but I hate having to retread the same level over and over again. A good example of this is the fight with the Tauras demon. It's very likely that the player will lose to them on their first time, as they haven't worked out a strategy to beat it. Having to then go and retread the level again is just irritating, since I've already mastered it.
