games full of helplessness or sorrow?

does anyone know of games like this?  ive been in the mood for something with that atmosphere.  The best I can think of is amnesia and the souls series. imo the souls series has steadily lost the atmosphere that made demon's souls so good.

Play NieR! The gameplay was lacking but the OST, story, characters and atmosphere are wonderful. They make up for that tenfold. Only game I ever cried at. It's my favorite.

it might feel similar because nier completely copied the idea of killing innocent creatures in your quest to save someone you love from SotC

I already played NieR and Shadow of the Colossus, actually they are two of the few playstation games ive played.  I loved them though, the feeling you get when your unknowingly the bad guy is great.

I need to get around to Neir and SoTC.  I started SotC breifly but wanted to finish ICO first.   ICO has a really nice atmosphere to it though, im not sure it would qualify as hopeless, but its worth checking out.

for my money Ico is the most atmospheric game ever made, but while it's a bit melancholy at times, I never felt completely helpless. It's more of a beautiful atmosphere as opposed to a crushing one like SotC
