It's been a long time since I actually watched it.
There is a plot though. It's obfuscated, but it's there.

Some autist made a nice lengthy explanation of it.

You can accuse the story of being a jumbled up mess, fine.
However the animation and music are fucking great.
I think the show is simply too bizzare to be written off with a meh.

I hate when the medium expects me to try hard at reading between the line. :poh:

Nothing wrong with not wanting to think from time to time.

from time to time.
Not every show has to be mindless "turn your brain off" stuff.
I can understand if it doesn't appeal to you personally, but it doesn't make it a bad show

Fucking this. FLCL has plenty of plot and it was pretty easy to understand. God forbid a show have a little symbolism and everyone freaks out because the art doesn't "make sense".

I never understood this. In most cases, I was "using my brain" because I was engaged with what I was watching.

Granted, when I watched The Sky Crawlers, I found it both obtuse and not very good, so, there's that.

Yeah, like, I'm cool with people not liking FLCL but that's a dumb reason to me.

Poorly worded by me probably.

I like when a show has a little bit of symbolism or has a plot a little bit complex.

However, in the case of FLCL, what we have is three first episodes where stuff happen and you don't know why. The episode feel not related to each other and I didn't feel like they were tied by the same storyline. Of course I could watch the rest to finally understand why a boy hit in the head by a guitar suddenly begins to grow robots from his head (lol) or if the girl is gonna take her revenge by burning everyone's home, however this show in particular doesn't make me want to.

The story and the universe play hard to get but doesn't give you (or at least me) any incentive to try to understand him. And after having read the link posted by MJJ, the story seems quite dumb to me anyway.

"No incentive to understand them"
I dunno. I was pretty curious as to why the robot popped out of his head.
We don't know why the bizzare stuff is happening because neither does the protagonist.
But as the story goes on it's all explained, sort of like puberty.
Which is pretty much the whole point of the show.

The reason why you liked it is probably because you didn't think "OK this is stupid" when a robot poped out of his head.

Because it's not real, it's fiction. I was intrigued by it, and wanted to know more about the robot.

Yeah but for me it was too much.

At the end it's just a matter of taste.

I'd argue, but its one of those things where I'm pretty sure I responded to it as I did because I "felt" the characters, particularly Naota, which is one of those things you need a certain mindset for. At the time, I was 16, and only just starting to become aware of myself as "an adult" as it were.

I think I accepted robots growing out of his head and the like because I felt it was its own reward, and didn't concern myself with an explanation, probably because I had already been won over by that point, and took it in good faith that it would be satisfying.

As for Mamimi's pyromania, that never really went anywhere on its own, and I would concede to an accusation that it recieved too much attention, or maybe even wasn't necessary, but its purpose was to push Mamimi's behaviour out of what could reasonably be described as "normal" in order to reinforce her self destructive lifestyle, as well as demonstrate that it's becoming external.
