Title: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 24, 2015, 10:37:18 AM
This is a general thread for anime.
For when you want to discuss something but you don't feel it warrants a whole new thread.

I just watched Paprika for the first time.
It was good, but I don't think I understood all of it.
Everyone was pulled into the same dream and had a shared hallucination right?
But who exactly was Paprika? Why was the lady able to suck up giant man at the end?
Title: Re: The general anime thread

I don't remember much about Paprika tbh
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 24, 2015, 11:28:13 AM
I think Perfect Blue was better.
Paprika I don't feel like it really...explored anything?
I feel like they could have looked at the way that dreams could be manipulated for escapism.
Or something. I dunno.

Perfect Blue was memorable because it connected to the darker side of the idol business and the media and escapism and etc
Those were all things I could relate to. I can't relate to Paprika because I've never been trapped in a trippy simultaneous dream.

Or maybe I'm just a fucking idiot posting on a forum called anime princess island at three in the morning.

Does anyone else get insanely bored by Fate/Zero?
I can just barely make it past the first ten minutes of episode 1
They just talk, and talk, and then talk some more.
So much fucking talking.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 25, 2015, 02:16:28 AM
I thought Zero was an anime original written by Urobuchi?
It's not that there's talking, it's that there's nothing happening.
I just feel like I'm having information shoved in my mouth.
Oh well, it's only the first episode.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 25, 2015, 03:32:11 AM
Ehhh I feel like three episodes is fair.
LoGH didn't pull me in until about the third episode and it was well worth it.
Although the first episode is almost an hour, so this only gets 1.5 episodes.

Post by: Kami_sama on June 25, 2015, 03:52:00 AM
The first episode of fate zero is bad. However things improve and, by the time you reach ep 3-4 (iirc), it's epic.

The op and ed are golden too.

Okay, I guess that explains it.
You got two episodes Fate Zero.
Two episodes to impress me or you'll be a Fate Zero out of ten.

I like Kiritsugu though. He seems like a pretty cool guy.
Made a better initial impression on me than that faggot Emiya.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on June 25, 2015, 06:25:08 AM
Fate/Zero starts slow. It gets real good though.

Kiritsugu is worse of a faggot than Shirou all things considered by the end if you ask me. But he had a lot badass scenes so it's cool.

I didn't like UBW.
I get the appeal of it, and understand why other people love it.
But I didn't like it all that much. Dunno why.
Maybe the VN is better.

I like the universe it takes place into. However fate stay night has bad character, poor writing and numbers of things that make an anime (or a book or a movie) bad. I'm on my phone right now so I won't do it but I could probably write a book about why stay night sucks so much. It's really not about the set up IMO.

Since the JoJo anime ended I finally got around to starting Watamote. It's lovely.

That OP was surprisingly metal as fuck.

Speaking of unexpected metal, I was listening to the OST and one of the tracks was like straight up brutal death slam. Very surprising.

Also seriously this shit is hardcore. Not as hardcore as the shit I listened to in middle school but far heavier than I expected from this show.

I don't because they're getting to do their passion. If you're truly passionate about something (especial in an art field) you should be prepared to take shit pay for a while in order to pursue it. It's just how life is.

It's not just the shit pay or the stress. It's when a bunch of losers from 2ch slag off the show you worked so hard on.

Oh that's not the issue here. I'm sure that heads will start dropping soon.
This is more like if they fought a stand user, then retreated. Then they try to assassinate the stand user, and he still isn't dead.
Then they try to have another fight taking up an episode. And he still isn't dead!

Although that is something that I do love about JoJo. It takes balls to kill a character as popular as Jotaro

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 29, 2015, 04:43:07 AM
Wait what?
Let me get my British history straight.
So British tribes got conquered by romans and shit.
Then the romans fucked off because their empire was in decline.
Then the Germanic tribes came in and settled.
Then they went to the medieval ages.
Then in the 1700s they became the glorious British empire.

When does Camelot and the round table and shit fit into this? I understand it's fantasy, but what's the canon timeline here.
Did they have that, then regress back to tribes and get conquered by Rome?
Or did it happen in the middle ages and everyone in the modern age just forgot.
what's the distinction between new Britain and old Britain?

When's your essay? I still wanna read it.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on June 29, 2015, 07:14:08 AM
5th-6th century iirc. Right at the start of the middle ages.

>Then the Germanic tribes came in and settled.

This is what the Arthurian lore deals with in part. They're all Germanic tribes making claims to the British isles.

I believe Arthur leads the Angles, who are fighting against the Saxons for supremacy of England.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 29, 2015, 07:24:24 AM
But where does old Britain fall?
I assume they lose to the Saxons?
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on June 29, 2015, 08:09:56 AM
You mean Arthur's Britain?

Never existed. It's entirely fiction with no actual historic counterpart, though I guess it was inspired by Rome. So there's no 'fall of old Britian'.

Edit: So to clarify, Saber wants to save her Britain which in Arthurian lore, fell, and splintered into tribes.

In reality, these tribes were never united (other than various defence agreements and stuff I guess), but they do exist and eventually form England.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on June 29, 2015, 08:29:45 AM

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on June 29, 2015, 09:16:45 AM

But not in the real world.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Kami_sama on June 29, 2015, 10:23:01 AM
Why does fate/stay night sucks ?

The characters

First we have Shirou. He's your basic harem MC with survivor's guilt, which makes him make choices who makes you want to punch your screen. The two most important ones being that he doesn't want Saber to get hurt and that he doesn't want to kill most of his opponent in the Holy Grail War.

The problem with his philosophy is that it's so stupid it breaks suspension of disbelief. Let's first focus on Saber : he has been proven by fact that he's totally useless in combat. Also, he knows that as soon as he dies, Saber will follow him because she won't have any master left. He also know that she can withstand blows that would kill him instantly. However, he still wants to fight in the front line to “protect” her.
The writers probably wanted to show how much of a good guys Shirou is. However, no one would do that. For Shirou to act like he does in the anime, he would need to be insanely dumb, because he would need to completely fail at understanding the situation. There's no way he wouldn't understand that his way of doing things is not only useless, but in fact increase his and Saber's chances to die. Yet in the anime he just do suicidal things and spout nonsenses as excuses.

Because of his comportment, he ends up in situations where he should die. However, since he's the MC, he is given a huge plot armor which greatly contribute to breaking your suspension of disbelief and making you stop caring about what's happening in the anime.

The way he acts with the other masters is dumb for the very same reason. The part where he is introduced to the Holy Grail Wars can be sumed up like this :

“Shirou, if you decide to fight we will have to try to kill each other”
“Ok.”
“Ok, let's fight.”
“No, I don't want to hurt you.”
“Mouuu Shirou ~~”

Let's look at how the anime present it : Shirou don't want people to get hurt so he join the war.

How will him joining the war prevent people to get hurt ? ->We don't know. Nothing is said about that and he doesn't seems to have a plan.

What will he do to prevent people to get hurt ? → He'll mainly chill at his house with his growing harem and will sometimes get out because he's attacked by an other master and let Saber carry him to victory.

Now the real question is how does this not get him killed early in the war ? Because of his huge plot armor, as said before, and because the other characters are dumbed down/designed so they won't kill him

Shirou has one of the strongest servant. However he's dumb and expose himself way too much. Why doesn't he get killed ? Simple, as as said before, because all the other characters are design so they would like him enough not to kill him.

First we have Thosaka Rin. She's a magus at heart, like her father. Father who didn't hesitate to give one of his children to another family. Rin, despite being like her father, makes an exception for Shirou because she has a crush on him. When she later discovers he has one of the strongest servant, she still spars him and becomes his ally and enter his harem because he's nice.

Of course you could argue that she's manipulating him and plan to kill him once he and saber will finish clearing her path to victory. However, while watching the anime, it's obvious she's just casting away her mage duties, which she is said to put above everything else, because she has a crush on Shirou. It's like the writers were pretending she was a certain type of character, and then made her acts like she had completely different belief that said to have.

Then you have Illya. In F/SN UBW we're given a good explanation why she doesn't outright kill Shirou. However, in the first Fate Stay Night, she just toys with him for no reason, allowing him to, in the end, defeat her. After this, she'll change her mood and begin to live with him in order to add the loli factor to his harem.

The others master don't have such a big impact in the anime so I won't talk about them. Also I saw the first F/SN long ago so I don't really recall what the minor characters did.

The plot

I complained a lot about Shirou's harem. It's because F/SN is not intended to be an harem show but more fantastic/battle one. However most of the war and the battle are just an excuse to put a fucking stupid main character into a harem of girl who's smarter move would be to kill him before he becomes smart enough to use his OP servant to stomp then into the ground.
So the show is just us following Shirou's life, Shirou's love life, Shirou being carried and getting closer and closer to the grail because if he were to die the story would stop. We have huge side-stories when we can see Shirou going on a date with girl, Shirou enjoying school life and so on.
At the end of the anime he's faced with an opponent so strong even the writer though he had to actually do something special to deserve the victory. So he yells “I believe in my ideals” and they the bad guy loses.
In UBW he yells “I believe a little bit in my ideals” and the bad guy loses.

On the other hands Fate Zero had characters who acted like there really where in a battle where they could die, they had real motivation for the grail and did make clever move.

To conclude I'd say that F/SN is a harem with a side story who doesn't fit the harem style while Fate Zero is a good exemple of what F/SN should have been is the writer wanted it to be about an epic battle for a powerful magic item.

Arigato Kami, I knew I dropped fsn for a reason.
In all fairness, Shirous plot armor is probably less apparent in the VN, given how many bad ends there are.
However this still doesn't excuse the sloppy writing.

Does anyone else wonder how the classification board reacts to anime?
Like, I can just imagine a bunch of old geezers sitting down to watch Oreimo.

Do you think some of the guys in the classification board have waifu ? Maybe they rate these anime "harsher" than they should so less people would see their waifu and so less people will wank to them.

Can you imagine them having arguments over whose waifu is the best?
And they rate certain shows R18 for having slut waifus.

Imagine how awkward it would have been if they got boners while watching something like Prisma Illya.

Oh wow I even checked madmans webstore to see if that was a legit rating and it is.  I don't even recall anything of lewdness going on in Nichijou.

Azumanga makes some references towards sex so I guess 15+ makes sense. Nichijou on the other hand not much of anything. Mio draws yaoi technically but they never actually "show" anything. I guess there is that one they show where she drew goat dud getting a bj from a dude but no genitalia is shown.

Got around to starting Bakemonogatari. I'm liking it so far. Ep 1 was good, I like the fast pace and how it doesn't hold your hand with the lore of things. I also really like the unique animation and color stuff going on. Some of it even makes me think of Serial Experiments Lain.

He's a born sociopath. Can't relate to people and feelings at all, doesn't even bat an eye when his wife dies.

The only thing he enjoys is other peoples suffering (including his sickly wife's), but he doesn't want it to be like this. But he can't find anything to help change him.

Eventually he snaps and embraces that his purpose in life must be to kill everybody or cause as must suffering as he can, since it's the only thing that makes him feel alive.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: ScumbagSoldier on July 30, 2015, 01:13:39 AM

I never understood this. In most cases, I was "using my brain" because I was engaged with what I was watching.

Granted, when I watched The Sky Crawlers, I found it both obtuse and not very good, so, there's that.
Title: Re: The general anime thread

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Kami_sama on July 30, 2015, 02:01:10 AM
Poorly worded by me probably.

I like when a show has a little bit of symbolism or has a plot a little bit complex.

However, in the case of FLCL, what we have is three first episodes where stuff happen and you don't know why. The episode feel not related to each other and I didn't feel like they were tied by the same storyline. Of course I could watch the rest to finally understand why a boy hit in the head by a guitar suddenly begins to grow robots from his head (lol) or if the girl is gonna take her revenge by burning everyone's home, however this show in particular doesn't make me want to.

The story and the universe play hard to get but doesn't give you (or at least me) any incentive to try to understand him. And after having read the link posted by MJJ, the story seems quite dumb to me anyway.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on July 30, 2015, 02:08:29 AM
"No incentive to understand them"
I dunno. I was pretty curious as to why the robot popped out of his head.
We don't know why the bizzare stuff is happening because neither does the protagonist.
But as the story goes on it's all explained, sort of like puberty.
Which is pretty much the whole point of the show.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Kami_sama on July 30, 2015, 02:10:34 AM
The reason why you liked it is probably because you didn't think "OK this is stupid" when a robot poped out of his head.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: ScumbagSoldier on July 30, 2015, 02:19:53 AM
I'd argue, but its one of those things where I'm pretty sure I responded to it as I did because I "felt" the characters, particularly Naota, which is one of those things you need a certain mindset for. At the time, I was 16, and only just starting to become aware of myself as "an adult" as it were.

I think I accepted robots growing out of his head and the like because I felt it was its own reward, and didn't concern myself with an explanation, probably because I had already been won over by that point, and took it in good faith that it would be satisfying.

As for Mamimi's pyromania, that never really went anywhere on its own, and I would concede to an accusation that it recieved too much attention, or maybe even wasn't necessary, but its purpose was to push Mamimi's behaviour out of what could reasonably be described as "normal" in order to reinforce her self destructive lifestyle, as well as demonstrate that it's becoming external.

Somebody track down Bubblecat and show him all this premium discussion.

Finally finished Kaze To Ki No Uta since I watched half of it and forgot about it. I really enjoyed it. Since it's a single hour long OVA of a manga the story is obviously clipped and condensed but all in all I think it works great as a stand alone and has caused me to start reading the manga. It was released in the late 80s but they stayed true to Keiko Takemiya's art so it has a nice vintage 70s feel. The backgrounds are all hand painted and look gorgeous. The story, being so condensed, may feel a bit unfulfilling, but if you're okay with some melodrama I'd suggest watching or reading it, if nothing else because the 2 MCs are super qts.

There seems to be a surprising amount of yaoi set in pre-industrial France, but I really liked the setting so I'm okay with that. Anyone have similar stuff to suggest? I'd like something cute but some drama is fine. Also sexual content is fine but nothing graphic, I'm not looking for something to fap to.

Slightly crooked teeth is considered highly moe in the idol world, it makes the idol feel more like a genuine human and relatable

At least jaypee told me so once

Other than that, I think it's a case of Britbong. Great dental care is available, buuut nobody really cares about braces. Here almost everyone gets told to get braces "just because" so we can all be as aesthetic as possible and not bring shame to our beloved king.

Everyone in anime always have nice teeth but like lots of Japanese have yuck teeth this is just based off the jdrama Iwatch where 90% of the actors have bad teeth.

Anime people aren't meant to look Japanese for the most part, they're much more a homogeneous mix of Japanese and Caucasian traits.

Full on "ANIME IS WHITE PEOPLE" is a bit silly, but it's obvious that they have lots of non-Japanese traits, intentionally or not.

I started Dog Days yesterday! It's by the same creator of Nanoha and obviously so soon after I started watching it. Finished the first season today (it was just 13 episodes).

It's a kinda meh action-y "guy is transported to a fantasy world" anime overall with some nice things here and there to keep you interested. Buuuuut it does have A LOT of animal girl petting. Every episodes characters are being petted on the head, stroked, etc. They really run with the whole, everyone is an animal person stint which is the series gimmick.

That's a 10

I watched Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's THE MOVE 2nd

It's pretty much all I've done today, I can't remember anything else, other than ordering the art book  :nyoron:

It was a good adaption of the second season of Nanoha, even if it did things a bit differently to the TV anime, but all were good changes. Would be a nice watch even for someone who hasn't watched Nanoha before too

It was 2 and a half hours long, and very nicely animated throughout

I teared up at the same spots as I did when watching the TV anime

I really love this series

A bunch of 40 to 50+ episode shows

I don't know if I ever watched any with 100 or more episodes, and actually completed it.

But I have seen like, 150 episodes of Naruto, and 400 of One Piece. Maybe more of either one but I can't be sure. It was a long time ago now.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on October 17, 2015, 08:17:08 AM
Naruto was just one of those things you'd give 20 minutes to each week to see magical ninjas do magical ninja stuff back when I was watching. I wasn't a fanboy or anything.

I will admit to having a Kakashi avy and sig briefly in 2004, maybe 2005 though. Nigga is cool. Reads eromanga, slacks around and doesn't afraids of anythings.

One Piece is/was fun. But eventually it becomes more of the same. I've been reading the manga on and off for a decade. The 400-500 episode thing I did in a single summer when I was really bored. Think I watched 8+ episodes per day or something, the rest of the day was spent in Ragnarok.

It's actually quite popular in Japan outside the weekly Jump crowd, adults included. It's got a lot of feels in it and of course adventure. It's easy to just keep reading or watching, and forget yourself for a while.

I probably wouldn't care though if I hadn't discovered in my very early teens, as the only manga available here other than Dragonball and D.N Angel.

Fuck ninjas. Naruto is way too edgy. Dropped after 1 episode.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on October 17, 2015, 04:23:59 PM
It gets interesting when they leave the village at... episode 4-5 I think. That's when stuff starts happening. Then it gets much less awesome by the end of episode 22 or so, because then it stops being about adult ninjas doing adult ninja things with the kids just being along for the ride, acting as a lens for us to see into their world, and instead focuses on the kids of the various ninja villages.

It's still kinda neat because a lot of the introduced characters are interesting (unlike the actual protags). But then around episode 100 it starts tumbling down, when Naruto's rival goes extremely edgy, and the show starts revolving around Naruto trying to make him not be an edgy cunt, so he can come back home to be his gay lover, because he runs away from home to become the chuuniest character to ever live and join the bad guy.

Not all CGI in anime is bad. But when a show uses it all the time and they won't even take the time to throw on some nice filters and shaders to make it look like it belongs with the rest of the art... urgh

I'll stick with Active Raid for a couple more episodes and see how they handle it. It's an enjoyable show otherwise (2 episodes are out so far)

Watched koukaku no pandora ep. 1 it's fun!

There's a mahou shojou element, since the girl  transform into a "battle cyborg" (henshin!!!!), which is her but with a purple dress and a purple top hat.

The ecchi is very toned down. Usually I drop ecchi anime before their first episode is finished but this time it wasn't a one hundred panty shot cringe feast.

Anyone else bored of Iron Blooded Orphans? Nothing happens in this show, it's such a fucking slog.
There's no drama. Nothing personal between Tekkadan and Ghallajorn. Tekkadan doesn't particularly seem concerned with the state of mars, and we don't spend much time with mars to be concerned about it either. I don't feel like any of the central characters are really growing or learning. Kudelia still just mopes, Mila is still a killer. Needs more robot fights.

It's shit.

>Flat characters that don't do anything ever
>No action
>Animation so poor even some of the still shots are bad
>Not really going anywhere with the plot
>Everything up to do this point could have been done in a third of the episode count

There's only ONE THING, the show has done well. And that's the mecha designs. But since there's no action, it's just wasted.

Okay, two things.

Chocolate Lolicon is a cool character. Too bad he never gets to do anything. He's Char and he's been in ONE FIGHT. ONE FIGHT IN 14 EPISODES.

I feel like Bandai doesn't even 'get' Char.
Char was never cool. He was a fucking loser.
He was cool at first, but overall he let his grudge get in the way of shit.
He made Lalahs death, a reasonable act in a war, into a personal grudge.
That's one of the things Zeta Gundam did well, showing Char maturing and moving on from the past.
He was a vicious lying, manipulative sociopath who murdered his best friend.

Although I suppose it's not really fair to dislike Chocolate man based on that.
Remember how great the rivalry between Amuro and Char was? You could see Chars frustration at getting beaten constantly by the white devil.
I love how worked up he gets in the final battle, going out of his way to murder Amuro. Stuff like the fencing was great.

In IBO I don't feel anything. It doesn't have to be a rivalry like in 0079, but give me something.
We barely even see them interact, or have any sort of conflict.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on January 18, 2016, 09:22:13 AM
I don't even think there's any kind of antagonist in this show. There's just been some corrupt or rich people wanting to profit from Kudelia. Even Tekkadan is just doing it for money, they're not fighting for Mars' Independence or anything. Just want to establish themselves so they can get more jobs in the future and stay together.

And officially I don't think Gjallarhorn has any real interest in fighting them either. McGilles even seems set on turning Gjallarhorn around and assisting Kudelia.

I don't even how this show came to be.

With Mecha designs like they have too they could have been a great success just by having non-stop action and one liners. Plus there's so many cool scenarios that come to mind when you think "Orhpans with a Gundam/Mecha". You have to have some sort of brain problems to fuck up writing the show this much.

I watched hells (alternatively named hells angel). It's a very fun anime and the art is really good, in my opinion. It's drawn a goofy way but the emotion are really depicted in a masterful way.

Active Raid's 3 first episodes have all been fun, minus the first 10 minutes of the first one because it's mostly info dumping

And I'm minding the cgi less and less

Got a new show to watch this season!

I loved the OP, the characters and designs are great for literally every character and it was comfy as hell.

but how do you have a show like this with nothing but like 3 fights EVER?

The entire show felt like it was building up to a climax but then there was a single one on one fight between two characters that was like 3 minutes long.

The character you think is a badass has like 1 short fight 3/5ths of the way into the show and then is afraid of fighting.

The 'enemy mook' you think is going to be the enemies that the Gatchamans are going to fight the entire show, the main character girl befriends it in like episode 2 and then it just slides back into a slow burn with like 0 action.

...But it also completely subverts some BAD expectations and tropes I was expecting, so even though it seemed really weird, it never made me mad or depressed me or made me bored with dumb cliches.

I still liked it though, going to watch Insight. Good OP and ED. Just so bizarre how none of the buildup or story arcs I expected came to pass. It's nothing like Kamen Rider or Tiger & Bunny, like I was expected (The 3d CGI really reminded me of Tiger & Bunny so that was my expectation.)

But at least it seems cooler than the original Gatchaman

I've watched the 1st 2 episodes of Boku dake ga Inai Machi, which is airing this season.

It's really good, I recommend everyone to watch it. There's no moe pandering or anything like that in this anime. It's a real story, devoid of the mainstream cliche that are usually in anime.

The characters feel real, and in the little screen time they got, I've already grown attached to them, and care for them.

The story is engaging and touches on serious theme in a mature way.

The main character is a 29 years old wannabe manga artist who works at a pizza restaurant and I can really emphathise with him, he feels very human.

I don't know how to really put words on this, but I'm pretty sure just watching the 10 first minutes of the show will make you want to watch the rest.

I don't want to talk too much about the story because it's the kind of show you don't want to spoil.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on February 12, 2016, 06:13:57 PM
What do you define as pandering these days?
WOAH LOOK GUNDAM IS PANDERING TO MECHA FANS
I think pandering is a show that makes no effort and just chucks in safe tropes that require no effort
The original Gundam did more than just sell mecha, it attempted a some what deeper portrayal of war than most anime went for.
Compare it to IBO, where they just chuck in two dimensional villians for shirtless men to fight.

I'm willing to excuse Milky Holmes because it has more to it than just cute girls.
Milky Holmes is a genuinely funny show with characters that play off each other really well and while a lot of the jokes are slapsticky, they're executed well
My favorite is when they're trapped on the island prison, and they free everyone and act like it's a big act of heroism.
But then it's revealed that they're on the island for being convicted criminals.

and sometimes shameless pandering is fun

Saw The Wind Rises
Pretty good. Wish Ghibli did more history stuff, surprised at how well it fit their style.
Although, calling it history is a little stretching considering that a lot of Jiros life was fictionalized in it, like his sister.
I like the sound affects. They sound like Miyazaki was making airplane noises into a mic.
Also Anno voices Jiro, which is unexpected.

It was really good, kind of a science-y magical girl show like Nanoha, but not as heavy on the yuri elements. In fact, I watched it because some anon on /m/ said it was /m/ in the same way Nanoha was when someone asked if it belong on the board.  :damn:

I'm going to start Overlord next, then resume Full Metal Panic! which I stopped watching after the first season (because I heard the second was more high school shenanigans than mecha focused)

I watched Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru (Yuki Yuna is a Hero) recently

Man, this show took a turn I didn't expect. I downloaded it because apparently one of the girls was in a wheelchair and that seemed interesting / reminded me of my favourite girl in Nanoha, and this is a magical girl show too.

Turns out that was just them foreshadowing how the second half of the show is pretty much Katawa Shoujo without the romance (unless you count yuri undertones between the main girl and the wheelchair bound girl). As they deal with the aftermath of fighting otherworldly horrors (disability), uncovering conspiracy around said horrors, and dread that the fighting will never be over.

I tried watching the first Kara no Kyoukai movie last night.
I fell asleep twenty minutes in.
I'm not sure if it's very good, because they don't really establish anything in those twenty minutes, except that Shiki is a doll.
But I still don't know what her job is, or anything about her other than she seems a bit grumpy.

No point watching the rest if it never pulled you in during the first minute.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on April 08, 2016, 08:13:59 AM
Series might not be for you if you fell alseep after just 20 minutes

Shiki isn't a doll. It's a (magic) prosthetic arm. Officially I don't think Shiki has a job, Mikiya however, who doesn't get a lot of time in the first movie, is Toko's secretary. She runs a design/art company. They all do detective work unofficially though, and that's the side of things which the movies revolve around along with Mikiya and Shikis relationship and history.

If you want to keep watching the series, keep in mind 1) it doesn't follow a chronological order and 2) it's a mystery and paranormal series, it's going to be slow, action happens mostly towards the end of each movie, and things aren't going to make a whole lot of sense some of the time (depending on your preexisting knowledge of the Nasuverse or the things that it draws upon).

Also Mikiya and Shiki aren't for everyone. You either relate to them a lot, or not much at all.

Maybe, it's just not the sort of series that's my cup of tea, but it's the sort of series that others can enjoy instead

Saw Plastic Little tonight because of this post
It's the sort of 90s OVA where you'd rent it out from Block Buster on a friday night and get drunk with.
It has amazing fanservice, and the ending leaves you with a really happy feeling, but I really feel like it would have benefited from an extra episode, or even just an extra twenty minutes or so to flesh out the world a little more.

This.

I remember renting some tape, can't remember the name, but it was about a senile old man being used to demo some kind of life support pod, and other old man hackers turned it into a mecha with his dead wife's personality...or something...

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

It's funny, I never made the switch from VHS to DVD

Never got a DVD player, and I was too poor to buy DVDs so I just... stopped buying movies, and torrented everything when I figured that thing out

I still had my ancient VHS player hooked up until 2010 when I moved for uni and left all that stuff behind and threw it away upon my return here

Now I'll never be able to relive my childhood watching old VHS cartoons and movies ever again

If it's of any consolation for you just know that I say those things mainly as a joke.

In reality I'll craft a long an elaborate scenario in my head while lying on my bed, in place of trying to sleep. In this scenario I'll meet her through a way or another and after picturing our fun adventures together I'll begin to craft the part where we fell in love with each other, spending a special amount of time picturing the night where we cuddle under the only blanket we have, the closest possible to the campfire.

I usually fell asleep before reaching the point where I think about us having intercourse and, should I reach it, I would also have reached such a level of diabetes that I'd skip it on my own volition and start wondering about the number, sex and name of our children.

I am so alone.

Watched the latest episode of Kuma Miko!

The shoulder-less miko outfit is really pretty if you ask me, though the gold medallion is a bit much.

I didn't much care for the shopping segment, I feel it was trying to be weird-comedic in a Pop Team Epic (http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/pop-team-epic-r17561) way but it didn't click

The delinquent girl scene leading up to it was great though!

Ming, just watch/play some more "obscure" things.

Doesn't even have to be /that/ obscure

if it's not a super popular currently airing thing or an old classic, or is propped up entirely by fanbase like Touhou, than chances are a girl will only have like, 3 doujins and a handful of lewd pics on pixiv.

Watching Magical Knight Rayearth

It's an alright show, but would probably have loved it if I saw it as a kid. 3 middle school girls get transported to a strange land in turmoil where willpower is magic. In order to return back home, they must defeat an evil High Priest who's imprisoned the Princess of the lands, and revive the Rune Gods. Heavily influenced by JRPGs.

I love that bit in the second episode where the history teams tank gets blown up because they could see their stupid flags peeking over the wall.

Imagine an alternate future where Black Forest won
>wooooow Miporin can't belive your team of 7 tanks lost to our team of 20 which includes one borderline invinceible tank guess you're just a fucking scrub who sucks at Senshado :^)

The part where they have to look for the lost (!?) tanks is also golden.

"So we forgot a tank at the bottom of the ship."
"I'm in the flower arrangement club so I can smell iron hundreds of meters away."

The last episode of kumamiko was bull shit.
This. All they had to do was have Machi do a little wake up after the crowd started cheering her on. You could have her develop there past her social anxiety. Then Natsu could also develop and realise that one day he's not going to be able to shelter machi forever. Both characters have a nice little arc.

Instead Machi gets worse for no fucking reason and everyone just goes along with it and celebrates the fact that she is unable to communicate with anyone outside of her tiny village and continue to treat her like a novelty doll that they can dress up and pass around. Machi will probably grow up to become a bitter shut in neet. This is the darkest ending I've seen in a while.

Also I'm pretty sure Yoshio should be put under watch for child exploitation or something.

Just finished it.

The show as a whole went to shit as soon as they started with the whole idol crap and Yoshio became way too pushy and controlling

As for the ending... I just. What. Machi seems to have gone absolutely insane. Even the last bit with the tablet and internet shopping had her being more dumb than usual like she completely lost her desire to understand anything anymore

I was actually expecting some sort of last minute reveal that she was hallucinating Natsu this whole time from the mood

I didn't mind the idol crap too much at first. Stuff like the advert was funny.

Yoshio is a cunt though, talking about sacrificing Machi for muh village. It's not even joking anymore, it's literally child exploitation.
The bit with the tablet should have been right at the start of the show. It's cute on its own, but its placement makes it look like Machi has regressed into becoming a retard. Also the joke where Yoshio doesn't realise that Machi doesn't want to be an idol makes no fucking sense. She's running away from him and he's clearly running after her so on some sense he must know what she doesn't wanna do it or she wouldn't be running away. Is Yoshio autistic?

It's Sunday Fun Day

Finished Slayers (season 1) and moved on to NEXT. This is some good stuff, incredibly 90s tho

Nyanko Days was cute today. But 2 minute episodes is still too damn short!

IBO had a great episode for once. No idea why I'm still watching it, maybe to justify all the Graze kits I bought.  :nyoron:

Youjo Senki continues to be great.

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: Ming on February 13, 2017, 02:39:44 PM
It's definitively better. But it's still got a lot of problems.

It at least has an actual plot now, there's not as much focus on Tekkadan, seems they realized people actually liked Gjallarhorn more so they have a new group of characters + Gaelio in a mask, and Kudelia basically just got a few scenes to show she's still alive, so she's no longer eating entire episodes. Also, named characters have been dying this season.

But...

The animation is as QUALITY as ever. Mika is still an autistic and invincible murder midget. A lot of episodes feeling a little too much like filler.

Kemono Friends is surprisingly enjoyable. I don't even know how to explain it. Post apocalyptic mystery zoo monster girl adventure show? It has some awful cgi which makes it feel even more unusual.

It's a phone game originally of some flavor or another, but the explosion of popularity is definitively from the anime and it's just crazy how it's become so loved because when I say it looks bad, I mean it looks BAD. And the content itself is kids show tier. But it's... addicting. Somehow. I know I couldn't put the show down despite having wanting to drop it after the first MINUTE initially. Here's what wikipedia has to say:

Quote
Initial reaction was poor,[2] including criticisms of the 3D CGI animation style and character design. Critic Hiroki Azuma reported on Twitter that he stopped watching partway through the first episode. However, its popularity has increased explosively since the release of the fourth episode.[3] Referring to the simplistic and childish but addictive nature of the show, it has been described (in ironic disapproval) as "causing one's IQ to melt" and "lowering one's intelligence".[2][4]

Multiple phrases and exclamations from the anime have become popular keywords on Twitter.[5][3] The first episode of Kemono Friends, available for free on Niconico Douga, had 2 million views as of February 22.[6]

The opening theme song "Yōkoso Japari Pāku e" rose to 3rd place in the iTunes charts upon release.[7] Multiple other Kemono Friends merchandise topped Amazon rankings upon announcement.[2] The unexpected popularity of the show created a shortage in supply and reservations had to be placed on backorder.[3]

It was reported on NHK's NEWS CHECK 11 that an increase in the number of visits to zoos rose as a direct result of inspired viewers of Kemono Friends.[4]

Season is coming to an end.

I'd say my favourite is Demi-chan wa Kataritai. Great light hearted comedy with some emotion here and there, well animated too.

Second place is Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon. Also a great comedy, with the best animation of the season I believe.

Kememo Friends get a special mention. I can't believe I got over cgi.

Truly the season of monster girls.

I started Ojamajo Doremi and am immediately in love. The art style is insanely cute and pleasing, the animation is great, it's very cartoony and animated and the characters have really goofy movements and facial expressions. It's a very fun and charming show that I highly suggest if you haven't seen it.

Cool opening, added to backlog

This season I recommend Aho Girl (translator's note: Aho means stupid). It's a really fun slapstick 4koma series originally, but it's so much better animated. You're gonna like it, I guarantee it.

Also Youkai Apartment, I haven't actually started the anime yet, but I've followed the manga since the beginning and it's great, really resonated with my NEET self which wanted to find a better place in life.

Symphogear also started its 4th season, it's alright so far.

But I guess other shows exist and might be worth the time

Garo: Vanishing Line looks to be great for action and chad protag, Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru - Washio Sumi no Shou is undoubtedly going to be just as cute and cruel as the first season, for the magical girl fans.

Also Net-juu no Susume had a nice first episode, it's about a christmas cake NEET who plays an MMO, as a male.

>DUDE REFERENCES LMAO

But bro

That's what a large chunk of the manga is isn't it? Either to something really obscure, current events, or "member that"

And a lot of that which isn't can be grouped into "hey look isn't it absurd for high school girls to be doing this" or "look at these girls being foul mouthed!" or "check out this funny face", often in combination

Not saying that makes up 100% of the content of the mango but it's very prominent

What I'm saying is, a lot of people have been saying it's shit, yet it's not very different from the 4koma and yet they enjoy that. Really what people don't enjoy, I think, is seeing it as an adaption where you get a fuckton of this type of humor back to back with no breaks. It's like Robot Chicken, which a lot of people think is trash too. But people like myself love. This type of content need breaks in between as not to become too dense. You know like intermissions.

In Robot Chicken this could be 10 seconds of just a Bigfoot driving down the street in an open top car wearing a trucker hat. Absolutely not funny but it gives you a comedic palette cleanser for the next, actual sketch.

But in Pop, you get Pipimi starring in the opening scene of Skyrim

Basically, the Pop Team Epic anime isn't bad, it's just different

Kind of like how Lego Batman isn't Batman even though it's called Batman knowhatimsayin

Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on January 09, 2018, 05:58:15 AM
if the format doesn't work as well then it doesn't work as well. Pipimi in the opening scene of Skyrim is not funny.
You look at that famous "your motherfucking life ends 30 minutes from now" strip and that's funny. That's a really great joke with a good absurd punchline.
If the Skyrim thing was just an eyecatch between jokes I wouldn't care, but there's like five minutes of back to back references.
Also I don't think the manga itself is perfect either. It has a lot of strips that I don't find funny. Maybe my IQ just ain't high enough for non jokes. But it works better in that because I can read it more briskly. Strips come and go in seconds but in animated format it takes longer.
Title: Re: The general anime thread
Post by: McJongJing on January 09, 2018, 06:02:40 AM
Also Devulman Crybaby was disappointing. I thought Yuasa could do no wrong but  it omits crucial and classic scenes from the manga and replaces it with new stuff that doesn't actually add a whole lot. It misses out on important back story and characterizations. If I hadn't read the manga I'd be fucking lost.

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card and Shinkalion were both really good though. Clear Card feels just as cute as the original ccs did and invokes the same innocent sense of magic and wonder.

Shinkalion is a really simple show about trains turning into robots to fight evil train monsters and I love it.

>It has a lot of strips that I don't find funny

Agreed, honestly I don't think Bkub's current stuff is even a sliver as good as his old Touhou comics and while part of that is just due to the absurdist nature of pop team, he's been getting a lot more misses than home runs as time goes on I feel

*sad honk*

jesus it's like I never left /a/

PTE was fun and enjoyable. It wasn't a great first ep but I think it was kinda getting some shit out of the way before really getting into it. At the least it had a similar surreal charm to Nichijou if nothing else.

I liked Crybaby a lot. The visuals and OST were fucking amazing. I thought the story was just fine. I'd of liked them to show Akira and Ryo's childhood slightly more but for a 10 ep thing it was damn fine. And I barely read any of the manga and I followed along just fine.

I definitely wouldn't call it millitaristic
There's no millitary left since most people are dead
In fact there's not a single fire fight in the show, although the gun does come in handy

It's more about the two girls talking about life and discovering elements of the old culture that died out.

Pop Team Epic is an adaption of the comedic slapstick 4koma by the same name, primarily centered on making fun of pop culture, written and drawn by Bkub, who famously drew a lot of Touhou fan comics revolving primarily around a certain Touhou character. Making him especially famous and loved on 4chan

I'm watching Sirius the Jaeger. It's about vampire hunters in early 20th century Japan. It's quite alright, nothing spectacular. But it did have this fine specimen:

I've been binging on Hajime no Ippo recently
It made me want to get fitted irl and I've now lost ten kilos  :sing:
I won't take up boxing though because I don't want to get brain damage
Great anime

ISSEI NO AIGA KIMI NI
Ippo is friggin gr8, bawled during many a scenes
I wanted to pick up boxing when I was 16 after watching Hajime no Ippo and I ended up going to an MMA gym that had like a boxing section and I ended up doing muay thai training for like 6 months because I thought elbows were badass. I stopped after one of my ribs got broke during sparring :tears:
BJJ is still on my list to try after reading Teppuu, maybe some day....

Get into boxing it's fun.

I hadn't watched much anime in a while and if I do watch something it's just something old I've already seen before such as Slayers at the moment.  Always a fun watch.
