Title: MECHA
Post by: Ming on November 27, 2014, 05:26:07 PM
ey kid wanna ride in a giant, mobile, mechanized battle suit

I recently marathoned Gundam Build Fighters s1 and have now moved on to season 2 (currently airing).

It's really fun, the lack of any huge threat of evilness that needs to be destroyed is refreshing, as is watching a show about what is, essentially, cute Japanese animay neckbeards, being passionate about what they love.

I'm looking forward to picking up Gunpla as a hobby I can do outside the wired!

I'd like to get my favourite mecha from the only Gundam show I've watched (other than build fighters), Gundam 00 such as my mecha husbando, BRAVE COMMANDER!

That looks amazing!

Another Mecha I'm absolutely in love with is Lazengann from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Sleek, flexible, uses martial arts, and of course, rape-y drill tendrils.

The ingram is really good. I liked it even before I watched the show. It's very late 80's in a charming way.

I only like super mecha sorry

That means Lazengan is fine but I don't really like most gundam except G Gundam

also I started watching build fighters but

i only like it because of the mom

I don't like the idea of a mary sue builder finding a super-great awesome mary sue pilot like that

it should've been his friend with the gyan learning to be a great pilot, or about him learning to be a great pilot

apparently season 2 is even worse because the main character didn't even build his gunpla???
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on December 21, 2014, 09:53:51 AM
Yeah in S2 he justs finds it hidden inside a trophy. Actually, its weirder than that, the gunpla was hidden inside ANOTHER gunpla, inside of a trophy. It's really cool though because it's a martial arts build, no guns or sabers, just JIGEN HAOH KENPO SCHOOL.

Buuuut they have a cute girl who is the leader of their team (battles are all 3 vs 3 now) and her mother is yet another top tier milf trying to set her and the MC up.

Slightly off topic.
I'm trying to remember the name of an anime.
I think it was an 80s ova.
All I remember was that it was a bit like die-hard, but with a mech, and a mecha tank.

Finally got around to finishing up my rewatching of 0079. It was really good, as classic as ever. Started Zeta cause I'm watching through all of the U.C. timeline stuff in order of release. I'm loving it so far, Kamille was immediately way better than Amuro was.

U.C. best timeline.

This is hella nice.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on March 20, 2015, 02:17:35 AM
Who's Kamille?
I didn't know that Zeta had a female protagonist.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on March 20, 2015, 08:23:31 AM
The whole of the Build Fighters soundtrack is amazing, it fits every scene perfectly. Gundam in general has great scores. But this one has more of a world music feel to it, since it features combatants from all over the world.

Who's the best asymmetrical Gundam? Yes you are, yes you are!

First season has so many tasty fights set to them too. Especially the fight between the Fenice Gundam (pictured in the video/song) and the protag. It might even be the best mecha fight scene I've ever beheld.

It's one of those fights. You know the type. Where the two parties beat each other up so bad limbs fly off and they're more a mess of holes and tears than a mecha. They even decapitate each other AND KEEP GOING, fighting until they both collapse and come to rest against each other. And they're both like,

And it ends in a draw.
Title: Re: MECHA

Gunpla Jesus / Char Clone's theme might illustrate my point a bit better.

I can't tell if this is a joke.

I planned on getting to GBF eventually. I heard Try was disappointing though.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on March 20, 2015, 11:24:06 AM
GBF is the bees knees. It's a true love letter to both Gundam and the Gunpla hobby. It's a bit silly because it's a show about Gunpla fighting, but in a fun, charming way.

But Try is utter garbage. I have no idea how they messed up this much despite afaik having the same writer and budget. I guess there's some George Lucas thing going on where the writer is actually terrible and all the good ideas came from others on the production staff, but they all went on over to work on Reconguista (which is wonderful by the way).

There are a few fights that are fun in Try, but for the most part, there's no point in watching it as it doesn't even have the same cast as the first season.

As for why it's garbage, without writing an academic paper on it, they got a really boring main cast that doesn't really interact much at all. Everything feels lifeless except for this guy:

Who actually gets more character development in 5 minutes than the whole main cast put together does in the whole of the show.

Also they made the show 3vs3 with Try. Sounds cool. But it really means 1/3rd of the screen time for the things you like. They didn't even try (HEH) to use this to pump out tons of interesting mecha designs so they could go for that sweet sweet gunpla money. What the crap, man.

At least the music is good.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ollistar on March 20, 2015, 11:56:45 AM
Good to know, considering I heard it was shit from /m/ and I take everything they say with a grain of salt. There's an equally large number of people hating on G Reco that I sometimes feel it's all the same people who like both and pretend to be different people hating on both series.

I'll give Try a shot eventually, since after I plow through all the U.C. stuff I'm going to watch through anything I haven't seen until I've at least tried watching everything (even SEED...  :tears: ).

Speaking of ones I haven't seen yet, ∀ Gundam looks cool AF. Super excited for that one.

Started watching Turn A a few weeks ago and it's pretty good so far. I really dig the far future / turn of the century setting.

Post by: Medi on March 20, 2015, 05:24:28 PM
I thought it looked weird at first too, but I got over it. Same with some of the other mobile suite designs, makes them feel like they're super advanced technology from an age long gone. It's great cause most of the characters in the show seem to think Turn A looks weird too.

Also, cross dressing

makes them feel like they're super advanced technology from an age long gone.

From what I've read, that's entirely the case! IIRC, technology advanced so much that a large portion of the earth's population died and technology basically reset to 0, and they're just now back to 1990's tech.

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Medi on March 20, 2015, 09:35:51 PM
I'm not that far into it and that's pretty much what it looks like. Except, moon race characters never seem to want to talk about how things are on the moon, but from what I've seen its not much of a utopia. I have a feeling their moon colony is starting to fall apart faster than they cant fix, and that's why they want to migrate to earth. Just a guess though.

I don't know too much about mecha, but I'm currently watching Gunbuster.

Aight. Just got done watching episode 1.

So far, I'm enjoying  it, but I do feel like it's showing it's age some, and some things just feel clumsy.

Some plot moments feel like they were done to get them out of the way, and little else (Like Coach's "motivation" scene.) and the main character, so far, at least, doesn't have much character to her. Not to mention, the limited budget this show was apparently produced on really showed during the fight scene at the end of the episode.

Also, I'm not sure how "to be expected" this is, but I'm watching a rip of the BD release, and it looks awfully grainy, like the colours are fucked up a bit. If I had to guess, it seems like they didn't have a very clean print to master from, which is unfortunate.

Still, I'm willing to keep watching to see where this goes.

Also dem lewd outfits. Hnnnnnnng

Domon got a cameo in this episode which is why I posted the cap.

Though technically he had several cameos already in flashbacks while covered up in shadows, and never referred to by name. He's the protagonist's martial arts instructor.

Zeta keeps getting better with every episode. Tomino definitely stepped up his game from 0079, he really has a feel for pacing in this one, there's never a dull moment.

I'm not a megafan of the TV series, but I like both of the movies a good amount because Oshii (of which I AM a megafan) took helm as the director and injected them with his style, which explains the cutting down on silliness. He did the exact same thing to Urusei Yatsura when he directed a movie for that series.

The first movie is solid and enjoyable, but the second one is a huge step up from it. That one is basically a prototype for what he would go on to do in Ghost in the Shell a couple years later in terms of tone.

Just read Ganota no Onna / Gundam Otaku Girl

Really neat manga about a salary man... woman, who is extremely obsessed with anything that relates to Zeon, Char especially, and the shenanigans that occurs around her at the office and at home. The cast is totally not gender bent parodies of the UC cast by the way. No sir.

It made me a bit sad though because no girls can be as perfect as the heroine is in real life. I mean girls who like mecha? Haha, yeah right

Starting to build my first gunpla, the FENICE RINASCITA, casually, while watching Gundam AGE. Not sure if I like it. But I'm on episode 9 so it must be doing something right. (The mobile suits are great, actually picked it up because I saw it had tons of cool model kits, not a big fan of the 'bad guy' suits in general though)

Might start on 0079 soon too.

Nippers / hobby clippers / model pliers / whatever  :heh:

I managed to save it with... blu tack, of all things. My plastic glue, any glue for that matter, has dried up

Just a super tiny bit on each fragments backside was enough for them to stick to the red head base thing piece. There's a tiny "battle scar" by his left eye now though. But it's not even noticeable unless you know its there, it broke very cleanly luckily.

Post by: Ming on April 21, 2015, 04:06:51 PM
Haha, I finished it!

Well, the gundam itself. I've yet to build the weapons + shield. Also I need to panel line this beauty, I'll get to that later in the week.

First time building thoughts:

1. Wow wow wow. Bandai nerfed any and all sharp bits. I know v-fins had that extra lump of plastic instead of being sharp. Didn't expect the frickin' wing pieces to have it too. It wasn't hard to remove, but it was still unnecessary extra time spent filing.

2. And boy there was so much filing. So many nubs to smooth down. Easily spent the majority of the build time on this.

3. TINY MIDGET ASS STICKERSSSSSS.

4. The joints are really stubborn. I was expecting things to move much easier. I guess it's a bit of a plus though, this way poses should hold with ease.  :yay:

5. For all the trouble, the result is amazing, and that satisfaction of having built something yourself? Simply the best.   :kyaa:

6. Posing is super fun! But...

7. Why didn't I buy a stand so I can actually enjoy the poses without holding it up with my hand? :sad2:
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ollistar on April 21, 2015, 04:16:24 PM
I found an x-acto knife works really well. I didn't even need sandpaper as I could remove nubs easily with it.

I did use a hobby knife before I got my model pliers back when I was a warhammer geek, but I found pliers + files to be more to my liking once I tried it, less risk to both the model and your fingers.

Thank you!

Here's a brighter picture I took yesterday, closer to the lamp (it was night, or I'd have opened the blinders to the the sun in)

I tired sticking a rod in this little hole in his backpack and the other end underneath a book in the bookcase to suspend him for posing, but it was super unbalanced and I couldn't really do much that wouldn't cause him to fall.   :damn:

As for murdering nubs, I use miniature / model files. They're pretty great, both on plastic, resin and metal. Got like 9 different ones for cheap years ago when I was building warhams.

They're pretty much like normal woodworking files, just much, much smaller and finer grit.

Panel lining really does help bring out all the little details.

Nice panel lining.

Started building the Build Burning Gundam, just got the head left but I'm waiting on better weather outside so I can get decent lighting before I try placing the face stickers. I regret not getting into this hobby earlier, it's so satisfying.

As for the gunpla, what an absolutely amazing kit. At a glance, it's the plainest of kits. No weapons, that includes beam sabers, and no shield, no cool backpack, not even some transformation gimmick.

BUT. It has the juiciest of articulation. The torso actually splits open on the sides to let the shoulders come forward, and the wrists have a hinge joint in addition to the ball joint, allowing the hand to move realistically forward and back unrestricted.  :kyaa:

The center of the torso also has some pretty good ab crunch and turns around very smoothly in the middle, where it doesn't collide with the hip skirts. The front skirts are small as well, so they don't get in the way of the legs either.

You also get 4 pairs of hands, which are holding things hands (which is funny since he doesn't come with anything to hold, but it does let you give him stuff from other kits so nice forethought there), closed fist hands, karate chop hands, and "generic cool dynamic open fist martial art pose hands".

Oh, and half the box is clear flame effect parts. It's not called the Burning Gundam for nothing.

And barely any stickers at all. Lots of the panels on the limbs also came molded separately as well, so even pre-panel lining everything pops. Got some real nice clear blue parts too to make it all look less plain in the absence of cool accessories.

This kit, for what it is (a cheap, high grade martial artist Gundam), is perfect.  :yay:

Edit: Finished the head. This kit is so much fun to mess around with.  :kyaa:

It's not gundam, but the Ingram I already posted is a reasonably realistic mecha.
But that one cost me 65 dollaroos.
I find most of the UC mainline gundams look fine.
If those don't seem 'real' then try one of the GMs.

The original gundam is always a good place to start.
I like the strike gundam, even though it's SEED shit.

And if you don't like any of those, get a zaku.

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: ScumbagSoldier on April 26, 2015, 07:21:07 PM
I don't know...I just kind of think that the gundams that have spikes going everywhere are overdesigned. Just post ones that don't fit that, and we'll go from there.

Also, some spikes are fine, just not too many.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on April 26, 2015, 07:21:39 PM
The Strike is dead sexy. If people didn't keep saying how shit SEED is I would have watched the show some time ago just to see the Strike in action.

Luckily, Build Fighters stars a Strike custom build so I already sort of got what I wanted.

Speaking of Gundam shows, I'm just a few episodes from the end of AGE. Started really kiddie tier and I was going to drop it. Then it turned out to be kind of cool. It follows a lineage of Gundam pilots over the course of some 70 years I believe.

It's got some neat character development too. For example, the Gundam pilot who was a naive high school kid when he was introduced, ends up a badass space pirate who abandoned his wife and newborn child to do said space piracy for 13 years.

Show also has endless suffering and character death, as is traditional. I feel very sorry for the first protag who's had to put up with this shit decade after decade.

Edit: This is the Aile Strike

Watched the first 2 episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam.

I'm not hating it but... yeah, this animation is pretty awful and Amuro doesn't grab me at all.

I like the captain though, pretty baller having the crew move him and his hospital bed into the brig. Also Char seems interesting, they did well to add some intrigue to his character with the whole sister thing.

Amuro is a bitch, you shouldn't really like him til Zeta. Bright is the real star of white base. Wait til the bright slap, it's so satisfying. And yeah Char is basically the best part about Gundam.

I finished the first movie a few nights ago.
I actually didn't mind Amuro too much.
Of course he's going to be whiny, he's a kid who's been forced into war.

Built the Transient Gundam from Build Fighters today. It's gorgeous, AND it came with a stand  :kyaa:

Obligatory shitty phone pictures:

Articulation is really good overall. For accessories it comes with 2 unique hands for holding the two large spears it uses as its weapons (also included but I've yet to build them) and 1 extra dynamic open hand and 2 extra fist hands.

Head has FIVE stickers. To be fair, 2 of those are the normal eye sticker which is split in 2 on this kit. The rest are silver metallic stickers which go under clear parts to... make the normal white plastic underneath look less boring? Maybe?

Rest of the kit used 5 stickers too which all went under clear parts as well.

Random thought: The kit is like 95% white plastic. I bet it will look really cool once panel lined, or really shitty if I mess it up  :damn:

try using a really fine mechanical pencil. It's easy to wipe away if you mess up and the grey tends to look better on white parts.
I used a pencil to line my crossbone because I didn't have anything better and I think it turned out alright.

Don't have any mechanical pencils sadly. I do have gundam markers, which kinda works but you have to use rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to clean up all the excess because these lines ain't be fine enough.

I built the Gouf today. Ridiculous amounts of parts for what it is. Haven't built any accessories or the backpack yet other than the extra closed fist hands. Looking at it as it is now, it's very plain. Color scheme is really boring to top it off, it's just a sea of blue and a few touches of sliiiightly lighter blue.

Articulation is is limited by the large amount of bulk, but he can still get some decent posing action on. Mono eye has a panning gimmick which is neat.

Hopefully the accesories will make this Not-Zaku pop.

Vulcan Pod Hand Cannons!

Giant shields that plug in on the back of the cannons

2 Heat sabers (can be stored on the legs, or inside the shields)

Giant double thruster backpack (to compensate, for not being red)

It also comes with this heat rod but it doesn't look very impressive so this is probably, the only time I'm going to have it equipped.

The mono eye can turn from side to side, so that no white devil ever escapes it's gaze

I really like this kit, my only complaints are that there's too much blue, but it can be fixed by painting. The hip skirts do prevent the legs from moving around much, but the knees are double jointed and the feet have great range of motion as well.

On my kit specifically, the right leg's hip joint is really loose and the leg will slide right off if you pick him up. I stuck some blu-tack in there which helps a bit, but the leg will still come off in some poses.

Gouf, signing off.

No I agree. I find myself actually removing a bunch of the accessories on my kits when I want to play around and pose them. Also helps with making them easier to get balanced because lol no stands to help them stand up.

Title: Re: MECHA

Like 400 yen. So they're cheap but it adds up if you want to display all of your kits on one.

I ordered 3 a few days ago from HLJ along with 2 cheap kits because screw paying shipping for just 3 stands (00 Gundam, Gundam Exia Repair II, and I also added my backordered Astraea to the shipment).

Going to have to buy like a display case or something soon to put all of these things. But I have no more room in my... room, to put something like that

Post by: Ming on May 05, 2015, 05:34:10 PM
I built the last kit in my backlog today, G-Exes.

It's from the Gundam AGE line, and it's a very impressively engineered kit. Despite great articulation it's so solid I can pick him up by a foot, hold him upside down and dangle him around without his pose budging at all, weapons included. It's all hinges and pegs. Amazingly balanced too, only going to need a stand for aerial posing.  :kyaa:

What wasn't impressive is the 20 stickers that needs applying, which is just ridiculous though I don't see how they could've molded those areas in color without going full on real grade (you'll see when I post pics). Also one water decal (which I'll apply tomorrow + panel lines).
Title: Re: MECHA

I'm pretty good at painting but I have no paint anymore. Plus for large areas an airbrush is a must because the brush strokes become super obvious unless you do like 10 layers with super thinned paint (waiting for it to dry in between layers).

(10) The official explanation for the Zaku II's cables is that they transmit hydraulic power to actuators in the mobile suit's joints. This always struck me as absurd, for why would the Zaku need to transmit hydraulic power from its belly to its backback, or from its muzzle to the back of its head? Likewise, early mobile suits like the Zaku II and the Gundam are usually said to use traditional chemical rocket engines, but this seems to defeat the purpose of having a thermonuclear reactor in the first place.

Yes! It almost felt like they held back on their budget the entire show just to blow it all on the last episode and I was way too okay with it.

Zeta is really cool and basically just keeps progressing things from the first series in terms of quality. The animation is way better (and assuming you're watching dub I hope you're okay with VA changes I'm sure not  :tears:)

So I'm downloading SEED

It's the most loved non-UC Gundam in Japan, and the most hated Gundam on /m/.

I've never actually heard why people hate it, or love it for that matter. So I'm going in without any preconceptions. Personally, I just want to see the Aile Strike shoot things.

I made sure to download the original series and not the remaster, because the faces have an awful style in the remaster and I would probably drop it in the first five minutes if I wasn't warned about this (thanks /m/, you're a dear)

I started with 08th MS team. I liked it but missed out on a lot of back story.
0079 is the first Gundam. Personally I'd recommend the movie trilogy, because it has slightly better animation than the TV series.
But apparently you miss out on a bit of character development.

Where should I actually start with gundam? Seriously.

If you want to just dive into the franchise and get a taste for it?

Gundam 00.

It's set in its own universe so you don't have to know anything about Gundam to get into it as such, but it shares the same themes so if you like it, you'll like other Gundam shows too. It's 2 seasons long (total something like 50 episodes) and one movie (which takes place after the anime).

If you want to get into the older stuff, I recommend watching War in the Pocket. It's short, and very enjoyable and set near the beginning of the main franchise universe canon.

If you want to watch the whole franchise from the start, see MJJ's post

I love my 00 because of this

Nothing falls off, it's super solid and has hands down the best articulation I've seen too. It just bends, and bends... and bends...

And those long, slender legs... the excellent sliding kneecap gimmick...

The back skirt which leaves little to nothing to the imagination...

HG, it's really good for a HG though, especially since it came out in, I think, 2008 or 2009, it's the oldest HG I've built so far and it beats them all in articulation, minus parts of the Build Burning which is also crazy

Just finished my rewatch of 00 season 1. I cried a little. Still great.

It's interesting how many things you notice the second time around that were lost on you the first time.

Speaking of which;

00 also makes a ton of references to 0079, I think because it was an anniversary show.

For instance, I just noticed the big bad bad guy suit in the season 1 finale is a gold plated GM with various fancy bits stuck to it.

The final bad guy of the show also happens to be voiced by the same guy who voices Amuro Ray, is a 00 version of newtype, and his suit is the fucking Guncannon. When he loses it he of course switches to the very first Gundam made in 00 as his backup.

Which is the fucking RX-78-2.

I dunno
Look at small robots like Asimo.
Even those are incredibly wobbly.

And now you've gotta make it big enough to fit a human.
And it costs too much for what is essentially a novelty. Not sure kickstarter will be able to fund something in the billions.

Currently we have those multi legged logging mechs, but those aren't humanoid.

Landmates are essentially a fancy exoskeleton, taking movement data from the users physical actions in-suit. (You move your arm, the suit will move the same, for example)

All you'd need is minor computed adjustments to movement to take the extra weight here and there of the suit relative to the pilot to keep it balanced and properly synced while moving, as well as a few other bits like the high range of motion of the suit vs the cramped pilots.

The problems with our present day autonomous robots do don't apply to them. But rather it's a mechanical engineering issue of making something capable of moving its limbs at the same speed with the same finesse as a human while still remaining light weight and of compact size.

I'd actually rather your dreams come true this time.
But regardless, with a mechas size and weight, you can't simply translate human movements to mecha movements.
Shit's just too top heavy to not fall over.
Your exoskeleton might work, but we aren't going to get gundams anytime soon.
What's that art from? It reminds me of Bubble Gum Crisis.

IMO robots (or robotic suits) like in Ming's previous post are a possibility. In fact there's already exoskeletons and human-sized humanoid robots being developed, but currently it's only research.

Really big mecha are unlikely tho, because their feet would need to be too big if we don't find a light and resistant enough material. Also things like helicopters or, if we want to be futuristic, some kind of antigrav ship, would probably be more efficient.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on August 21, 2015, 09:21:22 AM
There's also logistics to consider. You gotta rework the roads to accommodate mecha. Something as simple as power lines would get in the way.

Yeah big mecha are probably never going to happen. I'm perfectly okay with that though, I prefer the size of the landmate suits in the pictures I posted.

Pretty sure the only thing keeping mecha down is the technology behind stuff like BigDog needing to support more weight, as well as power issues.

The problem is, the actual tactical merit of a mecha is dubious.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on August 21, 2015, 11:32:59 AM
We don't have the technology and materials to make something properly big that could behave like a mecha should be able to even if we would create the software and a power supply with enough juice.

Like seriously, just think about a mecha walking. It's like a building dropping into the ground over and over. No, it's worse, because the force is concentrated into the legs.

I can't imagine what kind of ungodly suspension would handle it. Not to mention a run or sprint. Joints will crumble or snap.

It's hopeless, for now.

Probably, but I've never seen the powers of Unicorn / the Psycho frame explained or brought up in any OP hax mecha discussions so I don't know about them. (still haven't seen beyond ep. 1)

BUT if you want know about some really, REALLY bullshit Gundam OP hax suit, have a look at the Gundam Qan[t] or "Quanta". See it can quantize. It breaks down at the quantum level to either just phase through anything (making it practically invincible as long as it has enough juice to fuel it) and able to TELEPORT BETWEEN GALAXIES (it does this twice, once to go to another planet and then back), and theoretically anywhere. As you can imagine this means it has a frickton of juice to fuel that phase form.

It also fuses with what has to be the most OP enemy in Gundam history, the ELS, which are grey goo nanomachine replicators. Touch them and they'll convert your mass into itself and can shapeshift it into whatever the fuck it wants.

In theory "ELS Quanta" could touch the Earth and convert it into a billion copies of itself. Forget OP or hax, it enters the domain of a God.

If I had to pick the strongest suit in Gundam franchise, it has to be it, even without Moonlight Butterfly tech.

Some of the new suits in Gundam: Orphans, Blood, Tears and Tonkatsu

Really love the designs shown so far, especially the Graze I posted earlier in this thread. I even pre-ordered it and the commander type :nyoron:

Also Hyakuren, this one:

I enjoyed it too.
Loved the tank action.
It looks like there'll be a lot of manly camaraderie in this, and I'm a sucker for that.
But the visual direction can be really fucking bland. Too much exposition. Makes me miss Tomino

Also loved the tanks. It makes me sad we're probably not going to see it ever again as mobile suits take the stage. But it also makes me happy because I could watch the Graze for hours <3

The spine jacks or "whiskers" were pretty cool. But also creepy.

I hope Not-Guts and Cute-Blonde-Boy don't die.

Biscuit being actually useful and not a token pudgy comedic relief character was a huge, welcome surprise.

I want to restate that I really didn't like the fucking exposition.
It doesn't feel like two people naturally talking.
"OH HEY REMEMBER THE WAR THAT HAPPENED 300 YEARS AGO"
Like me saying
"OH HEY GUYS REMEMBER VIETNAM THAT WAR THAT WAS 50 YEARS AGO"

I really liked how the Graze were an "oh shit" moment.
Everyone freaking the fuck out over the mobile suits.
Title: Re: MECHA

http://gundamguy.blogspot.se/2015/10/hg-1144-graze-review-by-hacchaka.html

It's too early to say if the show will be good or not, but god damn this is going to be the best line of HG kits they ever made. What really surprises me is that they're so cheap too despite having the frame. Both Graze (and its variants) and Barbatos are like 700something on AmiAmi.

Oh my this was a remarkably cool short

http://animatorexpo.com/cassettegirl/

There's a long intro for animator expo before the thing starts, you can skip ahead

It's a short movie about a girl who hunts for cassettes which she can play with her mecha to get retro powers and fight what I think are evil retro inspired robots

The one in this short seems to be... Optimus Prime, blacked out and with extra stuff on him

WATCH IT

Holy cow, IBOs second episode was really great. The exposition isn't bad like I thought it would be, and the fight was really fun.
Biscuit best boy. I want to see Orga and Mika make out. I finally see what the fujoshi see
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on October 11, 2015, 11:37:56 AM
Second episode rocked! It's nice to see some good ol' big ass mace beating high tech suits around. I hope the more physical, ground combat aspect remains throughout the show. It gets very boring when you have beam sabers just slashing stuff in half and laser spam in space, all the time and nothing else.

Really liked the veteran Graze pilot. Considering he's going to face them alone now and the next episode is called 'Glorious Demise' he's probably going to die. God damn it. Though I did hear that there would be a Graze suit joining the Orphans (the 'Graze Kai / Custom model kit). Maybe it's his, after being repaired. He doesn't exactly seem fond of following through with butchering the kids.

Orga and Mika have an interesting relationship. Mika definitely views Orga as a big brother who's never wrong. Can totally see why people were calling Orga, Kamina.

Biscuit's sisters are super adorable! That they did the NEXT TIME ON GUNDAM bit in tandem was great.

Nice to see that Bondie Princess is getting her head out of the clouds relatively quickly. She even looks to be doing some mechanic work from the preview.

Speaking of which, I saw a Graze shoulder part on the Barbatos in the preview. Guess the mixing and matching gimmick is going to start now.

Now if you excuse me I'm going to rewatch the episode. Or at least the action.

Oh boy

Mikatsuki is becoming increasingly disturbing

He doesn't even hesitate for a second before shooting people dead

I mean, Gundam protags kill people all the time, but that's while in battles, with mobile suits

This space rat just shoots defenceless people dead face to face with a handgun

And the bracelet sniffing...

Not to mention how he seems to just do whatever Orga wants, with no opinion of his own

The only thing we know he actually wants is to keep his comrades alive, but I bet we'll find out he just thinks that because Orga told him that's what he's supposed to do

Other than that, can't wait for Guts to get the captured Graze

Not even Gyanko's developed bosom could save Try from being bad.

But at least it isn't as bad as IBO. In Try there's at least action happening on the regular even if the rest is either hollow, poorly written or just bland.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on February 04, 2016, 05:56:53 AM
Iron Blooded Orphans is so, so, so fucking bad.
There's almost nothing at stake, because no one seems particularly invested in stopping ghallajhorn and freeing mars.
Ghallajhorn doesn't seem very invested either, with how little resistance they've displayed towards what's her name and Tekkadan
Mikazuki is fucking dull and static. Not enough interactions between him and Orga to sell me on their bromance.
Blonde bitch had a lot of potential, but I'm seeing no growth. Just "oh woe is me I need to be stronger for these kids and Mars" but she doesn't DO ANYTHING
Too many villains we have no investment in. Teiwaz fight was over practically nothing.
Pirates fight has no emotional stakes. They're just some random pirates. I got no reason to care because I know nothing about them.

Compare this to 0079, or Zeta. The protagonists have clear goals: stop Zeon and protect white base/remove Titans
A good amount of time is spent building up these factions as threats. You see the Titans pull off a number of crimes, a woman defects because of it, Kamilles parents are killed by them, thus giving him a personal involvement in the conflict.
We see Zeon colony drop niggas and blow up Amuros home. From there Amuro and White Base are hounded by Char and Zeon forces, thus forging an emotional engagement over time.

In IBO you sort of have this at the start with Ghallajhorn attacking CGS, but it's resolved in like five episodes and then we spend 7 meandering about.
I dropped this show at episode 14. Did it ever get better?
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on February 04, 2016, 12:30:33 PM
Well...  :damn:

We finally got one more fight last episode. The fact that I have to say that there's finally a fight in a mecha show like it's something special in itself only goes to show how horribly mismanaged the project is.

Sadly it was poorly directed and animated, AGAIN. The lack of fightan would have at least been a little forgivable if they were actually really well done and worth waiting for.

Akihiro got his new MS, Gundam Gusion Rebake (the frog Gundam with all the heavy armour removed), and Purple Hair Man got his new MS, Gundam Kimaris. Both are really cool, yet as I said, the fight was poor.

Kudelia once again went THESE POOR PEOPLE and did nothing (several times, as is tradition). But in this last episode she also once again went I'VE DECIDED TO FIGHT. Only this time the show is actually starting to turn her into a revolutionary figure head by having her make that statement on Live TV after the (failed) rebellion on the Colony.

Oh, and we're still not at Earth.

 :eee:

Also NotChar still hasn't been in a fight since Episode 3 I think it was.

I'm so mad at how poor IBO turned out to be because I love the mecha designs so much.

 :sad2:

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on February 05, 2016, 06:33:32 AM
I really liked Greco, but it could've used another season, or at least another cour, to properly flesh everything out.

Build Fighters isn't really a Gundam series proper, but it's great fun. Got me into gunpla.

Try... doesn't exist. IT DOESN'T EXIST.

00 is love, 00 is life

AGE was _just_okay_ if you can get over the more kiddie approach in visuals. Suffers from having Gundam in its name really. Fights are well animated and there's plenty of them. Great mecha designs, I WISH the kits weren't stuck never getting any re-releases outside the main Gundams.

Only saw one episode of SEED, Origin, and Unicorn so can't judge them.

Thunderbolt looks very promising but I'm waiting for all 4 episodes to be released before watching it.

IBO is the worst mecha show I've ever seen.

Tbh I think Aldnoah Zero might be better than Iron Blooded Orphans.
At least Aldnoah Zeros plot moved forwards every episode, and had some decent mecha fights.

Ming remember how hyped up we were with the first few episodes?

I.... Uhh...

So the latest IBO episode was actually good. Like, caught-myself-hoping-it-wouldn't-end midway through good.

Ein (black haired KILL KIDS guy) had a nice fight. Chocolate Char and Mika fought together. NotGuts seems one step closer to stealing the harem of girls. The next episode preview even joked about silver haired girl cheating on NotFelini while away. At least I think it was her voice. I think she's had like 4 spoken lines this entire show before.

We got a flashback of when Chocolate Char first met Gali Gali and the new white and black haired Gjallarhorn girl who really really likes Chocolate Char. Srs all her staff men are young blonde guys, such is her obsession.

It was also the token re-entry episode so we've arrived at Earth now.

Too bad this should have been like... episode 4 or 5... not 19. Hopefully the last few episodes keep it up.

Animation is still QUALITY though

I'm starting to shake with disappointment and loathing with each episode now, so much does it piss me off

Killing and mutilating every likable character

Glorifying space rats

I just

I JUST NEED TO SEE THOSE KIDS DIE

HORRIBLE DEATHS

OVER AND OVER

At least you aren't watching SEED dude
The first 30 episodes are alright to great, albeit with some retarded moments
But then it all just goes to shit when they give Kira the freedom
Suddenly he doesn't have to deal with the moral consequences of fighting a war since he can just disable grunt mechs now
It KILLS the tension and cops out of Kiras development and the ethical themes the show had up until this point

mmm thighs

I finished SEED last night. Despite my myriad of complaints with the show, I actually really enjoyed it.
Just roll with and laugh at the bullshit and it can be a fun show. A lot of the designs are really nice too, like the Aile Strike.
The dub is actually pretty great too.

SEED Destiny is really trash though. The first scene of the first episode is hilariously dumb. It's like 3 minutes long, go watch it.

I felt really bad when the nerd was making his speech to the zeeks about how they didn't need to fight anymore, and how all of them could survive, only for his mates to use it to buy time to beamsabre them.

I'm glad Daryl got something of a happy ending. Even if he'll probably bite it at Aboa Qu.

There's even similarity between the battle damage of the Gundam pilots in the final fights

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on April 25, 2016, 06:34:09 PM
Look at this webm. It sets up Daryls backstory in five seconds, where IBO would have used a ten minute exposition dump:
https://a.pomf.cat/xbxtnf.webm

There's lots of little symbolic things in there too, like when the mums white umbrella is pulled away by the wind, and is replaced by a zakus white parachute. It visually communicates to the audience that Daryl was dragged off to war and away from his life, without needing to tell us this.

It's the little things that make a show.
Title: Re: MECHA

Yeah "show don't tell" is storytelling 101 and IBO botched it so hard
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on April 25, 2016, 06:47:20 PM
If they did that same scene in IBO, it'd be Daryl sitting there going "Well you see, this is the story all about how my life got flip turned upside down" and he'd talk for 5 minutes while Aida repeats everything back to him and explains how sorry she feels for him.

First chapter of the IBO side material manga has been scanlated

Seems like a fairly generic "bitter young man seeks revenge for the death of his parents and learns about friendship and love along the way" story.

I'll see where it goes. Can't be worse than IBO proper.

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ky on May 04, 2016, 09:34:39 AM
I used black as the first coat then only used a mixed paint of the left over black with white to rub on grey then before the paint set in like 10 minutes later I mixed the left over paint and made a ugly brown and dry brushed it on.

I almost snapped it in half when I was hacking away at it with a crafting knife lol. I mostly painted it to hide the plastic stress marks on the shield.

Still gotta use powders and touch up the greys and add weathering.

My friend wanted to watch some anime together so I decided nows a good time to watch thunderbolt.  Wasn't too bad in the end.  It was nice to see some zaku 2 and some zaku 1s again.

One day I shall get enough money to buy an airbrush maybe some bloody primer.   :gloom:
Then I can rip apart the thunderbolt zaku 1 , whip down some sanding then prime that sexy body up. Lathering it up in lovely rustic browns and burnt char blacks while keeping that caramel colour theme.

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ky on May 16, 2016, 11:30:58 PM
Why does a website not exist that can be used as a colour guide with all the colour palettes of the most common modelling paints exist that allows you to paint directly on the website.  I know some site exists that just has what colours are used in the manual but they should totally expand into something bigger.

Also I never been on /m/ before.

Title: Re: MECHA

I would have to use that dropper or something tool to get the right hue of colour as I use the paint bucket thingy.

Seems the primer will take a whole night to dry so sadly I won't be able to paint anything till next week when I have free time.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ming on May 17, 2016, 01:11:36 PM
The stencil is indeed from that one stencil site linked in the stencil thread on /m/

You can just google the name of the mecha though and stencil to find stuff tho

Why does a website not exist that can be used as a colour guide with all the colour palettes of the most common modelling paints exist

Pretty sure nobody cares enough to do it, it's a pretty big project. Plus because no paint brand carries every single tone you'd ever want, you always have to mix anyway and at that point the site's usefulness becomes so-so though I guess you could have palette options for more common mixes along with the recipes.

Plus if you want to get technical, you can't accurately depict what paints look like on a monitor. You could only have estimates that will be further thrown off by the users' color calibration settings.
Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: Ky on May 18, 2016, 02:23:08 AM
I mix all my paints and don't even use the correct modellers paint because it barely matters.  But I guess I'm the only one that sees that useful.  I swear like 60% of modelers don't even try painting more than one colour.

zudah has very nice looks. I enjoy how it looks, unlike a lot of gundams. Also it's fast, which is cool, and it's attacks I saw along with it's weapons are all cool. Also the fact that it did so well despite a fatal flaw.

The Ball is kind of cute in the same way other useless, ugly things are cute.

Was that your thread?

Zeon are a bunch of retards who invested millions into mobile armours that got instantly torn to shreds by Amuro.

Atlas is cool. It'd look way better if they toned down some of the indents and stuff though. Almost like they try too hard to make it look realistic and it loops back to silly.

Those chunky legs are lovely though. It looks like it could punch the shit out of someone with those beefy arms. Skullface looks sick.

"A 'Mech as powerful as possible, as impenetrable as possible, and as ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that fear itself will be our ally." - Aleksandr Kerensky

"With the largest amount of armor of nearly any 'Mech, crippling firepower, and the foreboding skull-shaped "Death's Head" cockpit/head assembly, the Atlas lived up to its reputation. The mere sight of an Atlas had been known to make even a veteran MechWarrior break out in a cold sweat, and theoretically a single Atlas can take on and wipe out an entire battalion of Stingers in exchange for minor armor loss."

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Yeah the MWO version of Atlas is really dumb, to be honest.

Some drawings of it are bad.

But yeah, the whole cool point about the atlas is that it DOES smash the shit out of mechs.

The "Badguys" of the setting, the Clanners, have these super advanced mechs that have awesome ranged weapons, but they have a code of honor that involves not really doing melee combat.

So when the Inner Sphere crazy motherfuckers in atlases march in and fucking SMASH A MADCAT'S FUCKING FACE OPEN it's cool.

It's pretty great. The politics are surprisingly indepth for an 80s toy commercial, and the battles use a lot of combined arms like tanks and infantry alongside the mecha.

I wish more mecha series did that. Seeing mechas more as a supporting unit or having support teams is more interesting to me than one godlike robot killing upwards of 20 enemy mechs alone.

I think it opens the battlefield tactics up more so things can get spiced up.
Maybe I should watch it.

kickstart the bookclub again.
I don't mind it when it's just mecha fighting, but I fucking hate one sided stomps.
Something 0079 got so right was Amuros progression of competency.
The gundam starts out as a super unbeatable mecha, but there's still some tension because Amuro is inexperienced and the zeeks all know what they're doing.
And as Amuro gets more and more competent it balances out with the introduction of new tech so it isn't just Amuro curbstomps evreryone.

Compare that to fucking SEED where Kira just beamspams2win against suits who never stood a chance.

I really likes that bit in the 08th ms team omake where they use BB as a spotter. More gundam should use teamwork like that.

Title: Re: MECHA
Post by: McJongJing on August 14, 2016, 04:08:16 PM
That's what makes it sad. Guy survived being chased by the miillitary in the desert for days and then dies to a stupid accident. It's the first death, so it teaches our characters to stop fucking around and act with some more professionalism.
Death doesn't serve a purpose in life. Sometimes you can't see it coming and you get hit by a car or something.
Title: Re: MECHA

That's still the most fucking ridiculous death ever.

at least make it something more believable.

Title: Re: MECHA

Yeah that wouldn't have been as funny though.
The whole leadup to his death is hilarious because they keep showing shots of that grenade bouncing around in the side car through out the episode, so you assume that it'll come in handy later.
But no, instead it's just boom, you're fucking dead.

Just finished Layzner.
Really good ride of a show, but there's a weird split
First half is about aliens trying to trick America and the USSR into nuking each other with a quite hard scifi aesthetic for everything that's not the mecha.
The second half is the aliens invade and it turns into Mad Max set in a dystopian New York.

Good show.

New Build Fighters!

Here's a prologue episode that's been released, actual series starts in spring.

From what I gather, we now get to see suits from the second season of 00 + the movie, AGE and G-reco which were previously locked due to some licensing tomfoolery. This time they're using some kind of VR headset to play what appears to be a gunpla MMO, and pilots are now actually inside their mecha and can get out and walk around.

We get forget-the-term-animal-people (even though they're just in-game avatars) for the first time in Gundam history too. I thought it funny that the first one we see in this episode, is called Rommel, of the 7th Panzer Division. A nod to Erwin Rommel no doubt. I feel like he might be the new Ral.

I do like the mecha designs. Here's some I saved:

Lead Gundam, based on 00 + Quanta (00)

Antagonist, possibly Rival Gundam, based on Age-2 (AGE)

Rommel's totally-not-a-scopedog, based on Grimoire (G-reco)

Somebody's Gundam, based on Seravee (00)

Build Divers is ok. Better than Try, potentially. I love the opening if anything. But making what is essentially a show about a Gundam MMO is a bit, well it's neat, but sort of kills the idea of models fighting each other now that it's just 3d models in a computer game.
