I just saw Genocyber as well.
The first and third episodes were great.
The gore was really detailed and creepy.
I like how they actually animated the tendons snapping as the nurses head falls off.
And the way they spliced in real footage was also super neat.
The ship was really creepy after it gets covered in guts.
The mechanical designs of the two cyborgs were fucking awesome.

Episodes 4 and 5 are so boring though.
I just wanted to see mindless violence. But instead we followed some couple no one cares about.

Anyone know any other good ultra violence OVAs?

Genocyber looks interesting. Did you watch it dubbed?

Yeah. It's pretty goofy, but the swearing works well for it.
The great thing about Genocyber is that it doesn't pull punches.
Other shows would have cut away from kids getting shredded by machine guns, but not Genocyber.
A lot of the violence feels a bit silly though. Like the detective in the hospital.

Out of curiosity, what would you say that the 'cutoff date' for an anime to be considered old would be?
Haruhi is almost ten years old, but it still looks quite modern.
I don't think that we'll ever be able to think of anime produced in the 2000s as being 'retro' because of the huge difference in visuals between the digital and hand animation.

I think it's when there's a notable visual difference.

Anime adopted its current look sometime in the mid 2000s. Ones produced in the earlier years of the decade tend to have more limited movemebt, a more angular style, more sticking to certain things that eventually became cliche, and tended to have a somewhat washed out appearance.

Has anyone else seen Neo Tokyo?
I chanced upon it tonight because the name looked cool.
It's a trilogy of abstract short films.
It's really great too. Some of the most fluid animation I've seen in a long time.
How come no one ever mentions it?

Yeah that's a really good point. I don't think 2000s anime will ever really be considered retro until the next big graphical shift.
Maybe if anime moves towards cgi animation more.

Is there any anime with better animation than DYRL?

Has anyone else seen Robot Carnival?
It's a collection of 9 short films from the 80s.
They got a bunch of famous anime directors together and said, "Here's a huge budget. Make whatever, so long as it has robots"
And the 80s sound track is fantastic.

This short is super cute
