I want to MAKE an MMO

something you could make for practice is making a multiplayer roguelike like this

or perhaps a mud

I actually played MUDs in the early 2000s! ...Because my computer was pretty much, an actual toaster, not because I was a fan of text based games.  :damn:

Thought about making one a few years ago, mainly because 1) not that hard (in theory) and 2) I wanted to leverage some neat AI chat bot stuff for fun.

Legitimately want to make a multiplayer game though. To be honest it's less because I have a great game idea, I just want to experiment for that kind of networking and trying to optimize stuff for big brain gains. Also, I kind of got fascinated with 3d graphics this summer and spent a week of my vacation making a suuuuuper basic, embarrassingly so, 3d engine in the browser. And I'm HUNGRY to do more experimenting with it.

Damn, dude. I've been messing with godot while I have the motivation during my internship, and you just gotta flex on me by creating a 3D renderer in a week like that?

I wouldn't really say it's flexing, take a look:

The hard part is algorithms. But... these are standard, and freely available. Ergo, I didn't "figure it out" myself, I just slapped stuff into functions, made some buttons to tweak variables, wrote a bit of code to actually render the output data as vectors in the browser canvas, and presto!

It's a cube because I don't have any 3d program to sculpt a real model with, in theory, I could write a parser function to convert mesh files into the object structure I'm using and display that.  :heh:

It's...going, I guess. Trying to get its libraries to work with languages besides its proprietary one was less simple than advertised, and progress has been slowed by sorta learning C++ at the same time, and class starting up again. Right now, I've gotten a first person controller and a room with a box. I figured I'd start with something as simple as possible while still being something I can be enthusiastic about and incorporate elements that will be valuable for more ambitious projects.

To that end, I've got plans for a Killing Floor type wave shooter thing, with plans for skill trees and randomized loot and stuff.

Aye starting simple and then building on top is def the way to go! Good luck with C++ though, I hear it's a nightmare (at least memory management).

Yeah, I wanted to know an engine that wouldn't make me look like a scrub (Unity) or make me pay royalties (Unreal). I figured working with a proprietary scripting language was dumb, and, well, Source and Unreal both use C++, so...
