Good morning princessii :wave:

I'd like to play a pen and paper RPG on this forum, hence the bad joke in the title. Before going in raw, I think it's a good thing to lay all thing on the table so we know exactly who is interested and interested in what.

People have expressed their will to go with a near-future settings who is grim, with big megacorp and the like.

Some people also talked about a magical girl setting. In order to have something a little bit more precise than just regular SoL with fighting with monster from time to time I'd rather propose something like spy magical girl.

I'd gladly make a scenario/campaign for either of those settings. I'm also open to other ideas but please submit them quickly so we can see who wants what and get going quickly.

As for the rule system we'll use, I'd like to go with a D20 one, because I know this system very well so it'll be easier for me to DM using one of those. More precisely, I'm thinking of using Spycraft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spycraft). It's a D20 roleplaying game intended to play games in the present of near-future centered about spy stuff, but it can be easily adapted to do other stuff. In fact, the only work I'll really have to do is create a new vehicule called "mecha" or something like that, which would take me 15 minutes max. In contrary to other D20 game, like DnD, the characters are more prone to dead and are less godlike after a certain level, thing that I like. I'll provide you with the pdf.

The downside is that the character creation and the beginning of each scenario can be a little bit long, because the game ask you to make a lot of choice during those time and it can be a little bit overwhelming. Not as overwhelming as Shadowrun though. So if you really want to go as simple as possible we can go for a d100 or d6 generic thing or fate system, I'll need to read their rules first though.


As for more formal stuff :
In order to have the game advance at a reasonable pace, it would be nice if you could make one post a day. On this forum it shouldn't be a problem but keep in mind that those post may be harder to write than our regular funposting. Of course you won't have to post exactly one time a day but during action intense moments it will be required.

In order to keep thing from going too much overboard, I'd like you to keep romance roleplay, if you wish to make any, in the background and to the « light » level, i.e. mainly hand-holding and soft kissing. Let's not go in the prolapse yuri rape mindbreak realm, we'll all regret it. :wink:

I'm down. I'm down with any system though I'll suggest the fate system. It's what my friends and I are using for our JoJo rpg and it's super adaptable to anything without being too complicated.

The year is 20XX. The city of NEO.API is covered in fog. There is violence in the streets. The citisen is ruled by a collection of multibillion dollar corporations. The top corporation is ruled by a group of elite ruling CEOs, whom purposely make life shitty. No one knows why. Perhaps it's because people will not revolt if they are kept down. Hoping for change, a genius mad scientist mixes cloning with sugar, no spice, and everything nice. Creating a beautiful and wonderful contrast to the gray city. Magical girls!

Ok minna listen up.

After reading what you wrote and little bit of thinking, I decided that we're going with the FATE system, which you can download legally for free here (http://www.evilhat.com/home/wp-content/uploads/FateCore.zip), because it's much more lightweight and will allow us to sperg out more. I'm currently about halfway in the book but it's enough for us to start playing, since I already know all there is to know about character creation. I will guide you but feel free to read the book, especially the first chapters, if you want to have a deeper understanding of the system.¨

The beginning of FATE game/campaign look like that :
When creating your character, you'll have to decide his concept had also talk a little bit about his first adventure. Then each of you will take the character of another princessii and you'll come up with a story of a second adventure in which you 2 character met. Then we'll do this all over again so every one of you will know at least 2 others characters.

Each of those story will allow you to choose an "Aspect" for your character, which will allow you to make him more unique and who is a key gameplay element.

But we're not here yet, first we will shape the world, as some of you have already begun (congratulation :yay: ). It is however a good idea if you have a rough idea of what you wish to play before hand so we don't end with incompatibilities with your idea and the setting.

This kind of approach is new for me but it looks like fun. I'm thinking of laying the foundation of the universe and letting you build on it. Acting kind of like an overseer. I will mainly intervene to be sure everyone gets to say his idea and also to be sure the universe "click" with me, since I will have trouble coming up with a good scenario otherwise.

But before we begin with this, I'd like to ask everyone who wants to play to clearly say so now, so I can make sure you have your part of world building and the like. For the time being we have :

Also, during the worldbuilding phase, try not to get too far ahead too quickly, so everyone has the time to discuss the new idea. Because it can get discouraging if you go to sleep and, when you want up, all the work as been done and you didn't get to take a part of it because of timezone.

Ideally we would do this on steamchat or something but I think it will be too difficult to get everyone at the same time.

Despite what I said, I'll allow myself to put my grain of salt in what has already been said about the world. Also as a rule, I'd like the world to say a little bit serious, magical girl are OK but think of the theme more like Madoka Magika grey than like Precure or cute thing like that. Coming up with cute SoL scenario will be hard for me. But grim/serious with cuteness and magic is A-okay.


Also Ming is it possible for you to create specific BBC code like, for example, [say] formatting the text in italic, bold and a certain color I've yet to come up with?

I'm a bit familiar with FATE, I read through the Dresden Files RPG book which uses FATE some years ago

(me and my buddy loved RPGs and Dresden, too bad nobody else wanted to play, uuu)

A super hero who uses a cool belt to transform into their hero form. Usually uses martial arts to fight and sometimes a melee weapon. Their signature move is the 'rider kick' which is... a kick, of some sort. Which makes things explode and die.

Once upon a time, they all rode motorcycles, which is why they're called 'riders'

Since magical girls also transform, it works pretty well

Question for the DM: In this world, is there a prevalence of censorship, fascism, etc? As in, is media or ideas deemed "Unclean" "Unsafe" etc, banned, with extremely stringent monitoring of such things, and others?

If we're going just with classic mahou shoujo things like shooting beams and some little sparky effect we'll just handle it with the current skill and only use the default skillset.

If we go into something more deep I'll add one of more magic skill.

As for censoring as I see it it would not be strictly enforced. You can always find or build an antenna and broadcast whatever you want, but it's hard to convince people to listen to your political ramble since all they want to do when they come home is enjoy a reality show and maybe pop some pill of some sort.

Also since the big broadcast network are owned by the people in power, they get to choose what's going on air.

The easiest place to be an activist is the internet, but if you get really serious sometimes  some people may disappear...

I like the idea of everyone being picked by a goddess. Though for kamen riders it might make more sense for them to make their own background if they want that.

I've been thinking about how this would work, and one idea I came up with, is that casting magic should work as you said, but if we're going for a magical girl/henshin theme, those are traditionally pretty theatric and devestating, so one way of doing it is invoking a "small" thing carries no consequences, but doing something "big" is not only a more difficult roll, but causes mental (and possibly physical) stress damage so that they become appropriate as the "finishing move" in these types of things.

You're in the driver's seat at this point, but what do you think?


As for the "picked by a Goddess" thing, it might be cool, but the abstract goal of "Love and Justice" has the potential to be restrictive while still nebulous. Also might be cool to fight "evil" magical girls.

Maybe just random girls awoke with magic powers one day.

So you have girls from all backgrounds becoming magical, with different agendas. Or none at all

Maybe various companies wants to track down the girls to either make them into their soldiers or experiment on them to mass produce magical powers. (a nice, late plot point could be fighting against a legion of mass produced magical girls, be they infused normal girls, clones, cyborgs, whatever)

That's actually a nice idea Ming. This way one of the main plot point of the campaign would be to find out why they turned into magical girl.

The kamen rider could group with them either because something something, depends on their personalities. But I think we can find a lot of reason one would want to pair with someone with a power so revolutionary that magic.

Same for the robot/cyborg/something of landy and character of people who don't want to be a qt mahou shoujo.

As I alluded I was also planning on doing a Rider-esque henshin hero and a girl of course!

We could easily be crime fighting partners and since you mentioned being a badguy you could be the partner who doesn't play by the rules or something of that sort. This would actually work well since with character creation we need connections to 2 characters anyway.

The way I see it we could do the "awaken" part during the char creation, maybe keep the existence of said Goddess a mystery, maybe these powers appeared because of something else... :nyoron:

And since your 6, make the meeting between your 2 groups during the introduction of the campaign or something like that.

The idea of the color is that it looks prettier and make the post easier to read if it's a long post.

The special move could be your stunt, as it is called in the game system iirc.

Well for the Riders, like in the series it's usually some sort of like evil alien group that turns them into superhuman cyborgs and cause the death of a loved one so that's why they're fighting. This could easily be made that the evil organization was trying to make super soldiers. Also, worthy, I'd suggest we'd go more superhuman than traditional kamen rider cyborg since landy and possibly ming wanted to be cyborgs and it would probably be better to have more variety.

Ok, so first here's a summary of what we said and some additions by me, hopefully it's enough to help you imagine where you character stands in this mess.

2136, the world has changed. After years of recession and sometimes political instability, people have lost their faith in the government. Using the disdain and sometime outright hate of politics of the people, the big corporation and wealthy people managed to tear down years of socialism. At first, the economy took a fresh start and everyone's live improved. Using argument as "you only really care if you sacrifice something for it", the wealthy, using the people gratefulness, passed law assuring that they'll stay in power forever. The most notorious one being the pay-to-vote decree, who allowed the politician not to need to convince the poor anymore.

Starting from this, the nepotism and old-boy network activities didn't need to be shy anymore and politics became about buying the vote of millionaire and more by granting them privilege.

Years after, here we are. You live in a stratified society where you can only rise so much. For those on the top, life is very good. The technological advancement made life longer, easier and healthier. If you're on the bottom, you will probably face dilemma like "how much have I to starve myself in order to afford a 20 years old home improved prosthetic arm to replace the one I lost while working at the factory?".

Some try to change the system, but thank to the pay-to-vote law, a peaceful change seems impossible. But with the new androids and weapon systems, an armed revolution seems to be doomed too. For now activist have no choice but to work from the shadow, constantly fearing for something to happen to them, should they become too influential.

You live in neo Tokyo and are born either from the high class, the middle class or the lover one. If you're from the high class, you enjoyed a life of luxury and had access to anything your advanced society could produce. Thank to your family network and/or business, you will or already have a high level job with prestige and authority. Of course even in this class there are different wealth level but, from an average Joe standpoint, swimming in tons of money or tons of tons of money makes little to no differences.

If you're from the middle class it's usually thank to your and maybe your parent's work and/or specific sets of skills. You have a skill-set interesting and rare enough that your corporate overlord would be annoyed if he had to replace you, so he has an interest in giving you enough money to live longer and be in a good to excellent condition to work. Even if you're living a comfortable life, you know that, should your company go bankrupt or fire you, you may well end in an assembly line.

As for the lower class, their children usually begins to work at the same job as their parent once they finish the short, mandatory state financed school. Usually this means working at a factory or working at the not-so-successful family business like your father's tinware company.

Neo-Tokyo had of course a lot of problem, be it gang criminality or, from time to time, more serious things like sudden high-level toxic air pollution due to some guy's factory either exploding or just avoiding the light "ecological" inspection because said guy dropped a lot of money under the table of another guy. Of course for the richer ones those problems are usually a 5 minutes talk during the evening news program, so it's not like it's such a big deal.

So here's a small overview of how I view the world. Please say so if you feel like one of your idea was too much overlooked. Now we're going to do a more in-depth character creation, I will write about it in my next post, that I'll begin to write just after posting this one.

Also here's the current state of the game creation sheet, so to say, for those interested :

Campaign name : API cute RPG campaign ~
Setting&Scale : Grim future. Character are going to play a role in a world-changing event, but the scale of their implication is still a mistery

Issues :
Current issue : Megacorp oppress the people and toy with the world, something bad is bound to come out of this
Impending issue : With (nearly) anyone noticing it, magic is appearing in the world

Face and places :
Tokyo megalopolis : Starting place, segregated by district : poor, industrial, rich and the like. The criminality is rising.

Now minna you will all have to begin your character creation.

This means that you have to come up with your character high concept and trouble. Your high concept will be your character idea, resumed in a few world. The book gives examples like "Low-level Thug" or more precise thing like "Low-level Thug for the Syndicate". The idea here is to have something you could use to claim an advantage "eh I'm a low-level thug I could have contacts in the black market", but I should also be able to use it to get you into trouble "this policeman recognize you, having already arrested you once, and so..."

It's ok if you have a high concept similar to someone's else, but try to make them a little bit different. For example "magical girl of frost" or "super cute magical girl" and so on.

You will also have to come up with your character trouble, which is either a personal struggle or a problematic relationship, or both. Like your high concept, you should be able to use it to claim an advantage but I should be able to use it to create you trouble. Some example of the rule book are "Anger Management Issues", "The Bottle Calls to Me" or "Debt to the Mob".

You can also write what we'll call your first adventure. You don't need to go into the details but it's used to determine an other aspect of your character, so put some though into it. Some example of Aspects given in the book are "I Owe Old Finn Everything", giving the character what could maybe be a mentor but also someone he may have to save or something, or "Smashing is always an option", showing that the character like to go in raw. For the magical girl wannabe, you can decide either to have your power awaken during this first, recent adventure or to have them awake during the introduction of the campaign. Do what you prefer.

No need to try to include other people's character in this first adventure, it will be done in the next step.

I admit that I still have trouble understanding what exactly is an Aspect and the like, so we'll try to make them together if you don't have any idea and hopefully we'll end with something good! :yay:

I want my character to be the CEO and primary shareholder of one of the smaller megacorporations.

She's filthy rich (compared to most people), and really slimy and underhanded. She knows there is no way to get ahead with how the world is set up now, so when Magical Girls start showing up, she realizes it's her chance to take down the big dogs.

So she has her R&D department make her a Driver to help her transform into a KAMEN RIDER to help the Magical Girls take down the big dog corporations. (So that she can be the one in charge, instead.)

I had the idea that maybe her younger sister is a Magical Girl, and they both decided that the best thing to do would be to siphon out the Magical Girl's magical power to power the Kamen Rider suit/driver thing to protect their rich lifestyle, since my character is older and more competent than her younger sister.

I was thinking about having a character who grows up very poor, always jelly of the richfags.
Then one day she discovers she has the magical power to print any form of currency.
However the police start getting suspicious of her for possible money laundering.
At first she has no real goals. She just wants to splurge on all the luxuries she missed out on and fuck off somewhere the police won't find her.

I'm doing some homework but once I'm done I'll write up my character (it won't take long since I'm familiar with the system) and that way there'll be a reference for newer people if they need it (though honestly it's pretty simple and straightforward) assuming no one else beats me to it.

Miyuki never understood why, but she never seemed to get along with other people. Her parents' highly skilled programming positions had bought her a relatively comfortable upbringing, but they worked so long and so often, that she rarely saw either of them, save for when they would show up dead tired late at night, curtly nod, and shuffle off to bed. As a result, she spent most of her upbringing all alone, eating take-out and simple home cooked meals in front of the TV. At school, she found herself surrounded by giddy socialites who only seemed interested in things that didn't seem interesting or relevant to her, and gradually became stigmatized as "That creepy girl with the creepy programmer parents."  Over time, she became isolated, bitter, and miserable. One day, her father, despite his fatigue, couldn't help but notice his daughter's state of being. When she explained her situation, her father , somewhat reluctantly, presented her with a somewhat outdated, but still state of the art PC. "This..." He explained, "...is my old beast. I've made a few modifications. It's ready to do things others can't. Connect you to people like you. Find things most people don't know. If you want, I can teach you things, too."

Miyuki, ecstatic to finally have something to feel passionate about, accepted eagerly. Over the next few days, months, and years, she would make connections, see unspeakable things, and gather vast amounts of knowledge. The more she learned, the more she got to thinking. She already had all the skills she needed to leave school and start working like her parents, never having to deal with another day of wasting her time at school, or being around her classmates again. But she knew she still wouldn't be happy working torturous hours in massive, inneficient, beurocratic "code farms."  She'd read that a long time ago, some people actually worked for themselves. It was then, she decided she wanted to work for nobody but herself, and never have to be bothered by anyone. But to do that, she was going to need money. Money, knowledge, and a plan, so she did what she did best: Sat at her computer, and gathered information. At first, it was only questionable content. Then frowned upon content, until she was discretely browsing illegal sites. After one particularly long night of this, she exhaustedly staggered into her seat at school, and was alarmed to hear her name called over the intercom, and suddenly found herself considerably more awake. The walk to the headmaster's office seemed to take forever. Once she got there, all she remembered was he said he'd heard "of her behaviour" and then she was standing outside, and he was asleep on his desk. I'll do my best to avoid being overtly Kamen Rider-esque since worthy wanted to be a rider and we should have some variety even if we're both henshin heroes. Also Worthy I'm assuming you'll want to have a connection between our characters since they're both henshin heroes.

Fuck it, everyone is playing girls since it's mahou shoujo, I'll switch it up and be the token male character.

Potential hero names: (please help me decide, which sounds the coolest?)
Super Bio Crystal Man
Great Circuit V
High Squadron Bio Man (no relation to the Super Sentai Choudenshi Bioman of course)
Explosive Chaos Force Agony Ranger (he obviously doesn't have a team so for something like this I would either have him trying to push the name anyway and making it very clear there are openings on the team, or I'd just drop the "force")

Akihiro grew up in unfortunate circumstances. He was born into an poor, low class family. His parents worked incredibly severe hours on a harsh assembly line, wasting away just so their son could have what little he did. Having little he couldn't afford to go to school and, as a result, he never really had any friends due to never having the chance to meet any other kids. He was left home alone most of the time and, despite not going to school, was very inquisitive and would read any and every book he was able to get his hands, usually from trash cans he would loot. Since they were so poor, he never really had any technology around, so he knew what computers and other modern tech were, but by no means was he proficient with them. He spent a lot of time roaming the streets and would often find various animals that most would find to be vermin, rats, raccoon, etc., and would befriend them. Most people would find such friendships odd and meaningless, but this taught him to value the gift of life and ultimately helped shape his view on the world.

Around age 10 his parents both mysteriously died in an accident at the plant they work at. Left alone with no one left in his life and no one to support him, he took to the streets. He spent his preteen and teen years living in back alleys with the various vermin that were his "friends" as a child, scavenging and stealing scraps of food to get by (a genuine Aladdin). After years of living on the streets he became very well acquainted with the layout of the city, knowing all sorts of shortcuts and never needing a map.

As he was reaching adulthood the organization began watching him. He was a top candidate for a top secret experimenting they had been planning. They saw his drive and resourcefulness that has allowed him to survive under these harsh conditions all this time. Eventually deciding on him since  he was an easy target and he had no one who would miss him or even notice he was gone, they kidnapped him and began experimenting. They were attempting to make a super soldier, if they succeeded, this soldier could be mass produced and used to curb any rebellion and attempts to overthrow them. Once they finished with the body they moved on to wiping the mind so they could install the control chip, rendering him essentially a robot to be controlled by the organization. However, something went wrong and he retained his memories. Using the chaos of the malfunction as a distraction, he breaks out and escapes.

Once back on the outside and after much thought, he realizes there's a lot of sinister stuff happening outside his little world and he decides to use his new abilities to try and change that. Having little direction on how to stop the organization and not being too adept at computer usage, he figures his best bet is to start small. He begins fighting every little crime he comes across and figures that if he works his way up to larger crimes he'll eventually reach the organization.

Okay, bit more detailed now
[I HAVEN'T DECIDED A NAME YET] grew up in a lower middle class family. Her family never struggled, but never excelled.
Also, she was blessed with impossibly good luck. Stupidly good luck. Often she pondered that she'd be ran over by a car when it ran out.
Because of her good luck, she never had to work hard. Or work at all.
Due to an administrative error, she was given a scholarship to a private school for rich kids. Growing up around them, she often felt slightly isolated. They accepted her well enough, but she never truly felt like she fit in. As such she'd often resort to trickery, pranks, and jokes.
She was dubbed "class clown" by her teachers, "amusing" by some students, and "attention whore" by others.
She longed to be rich, but did not have the knowledge how to become rich. And even if she did, she probably could not be bothered to exert the effort. That's what happens when you're blessed by good luck, you get lazy.
Often she'd try scams, and get rich quick schemes. None of them petered out, but somehow she was never caught.

One day, she awoke and found she had two new powers (WOAH)
She could generate any currency she wanted, huge amounts of it. Also she could perform a magical girl transformation. But she didn't understand the point, she could print currency either way. Top hat was pretty kawaii though.

Ecstatic at her discover, she immediatly began spending large amounts of her FREE MONEY. This wasn't very smart.
She soon found herself being stalked, by both the police, and the local communist gangs...

MJJ maybe we'll have to put a cap on your cash creating power or some other limitation, this way you can't just create enough money to buy the world. It wouldn't be fun otherwise.

As for MJJ, I assumed his limitation was from his power being new and him not knowing how to use it properly, with many abilities not even being realized yet. We could also just say he has like general craft magic?

Also it'd probably be good to have some sort of mentor mascot to help along people like MJJ who need to learn their abilities better, whether it be a PC or an NPC.

A magical girl of ice (Ming)

Now we will enter the phase 2 of character creation. We have to do 4 things (whoa that's a lot :eee:).
First put words of your high concept, which is the description of your character. By spending fate point and using your high concept as an "excuse", you or I can ask for something to happen. The description just above are example of high concept for your characters, feel free to come up with your own. :wave:

I'd also like everyone to come up with a trouble, which is either a personal problem or a problem with another person/organisation your character have. It's for spicing thing up too. For example Ming's trouble could be some sort of emotional scare due to being an orphan and living on the street and Olli's one "hunted by the organisation".

Also, based on the background you already wrote, you should come up with an aspect, who works basically like your high concept. For example MJJ aspect could be "lucky but lazy". This way he could use it when he feels his character needs to be lucky, but I could also use it to put his character in trouble due to his laziness.

And finally we need to attribute everyone the story of someone else, then you'll have to write how your character showed up in the life of the character of the people you inherited the story from. Check with the other person if she's OK with what you wrote, so no one feel like his character is being "robbed". This little intervention will allow you to write down an other aspect of your character.

For example Ollistar's character could have helped Ming's one when she was attacked by a pervert, or something else.

As for choosing who gets the story of who, the FATE book suggest to attribute them randomly, but maybe it's better if you choose which one you want/inspire you the most. :heart:

Nothing wrong with that idea. It might be better the other way around though, my character coming to yours for the same reason, potential money as well as a magical girl to ally with.

Though on the other hand, maybe me and Ollistar can be connected somehow, like maybe the Driver he uses to transform is a prototype he managed to steal or from her corporation or something, I dunno. Usually in the shows a lot of belts come from the same organization or source.
