Just got back.

The movie was a bit disappointing. It did have its moments, but overall it felt very drawn out, like they cut out the ending of the second movie and tried to make it last 2 and a half hours. Other elements on the other hand felt very sudden and like they came out of nowhere. I suspect the 'extended' version will remedy that though in time.

A bit much forced romance sub plot and other cheese for my taste. There were lots of lines mimicking those of characters in the first trilogy too, but I didn't mind that.

The action, effects, music, all that good stuff was amazing, as you'd expect (though CGI orcs still annoy the hell out of me).

I don't feel like this was what I wanted or expected, but I don't dislike it. It's a good movie. Just not what the little me who grew up on the book dreamt about (I can say that about the previous two movies as well).

I give it... 7.5 out of 10. Might make a full 8 come extended version. (I'd rate the other Hobbit movies 8.5, and the original trilogy 10)

Edit: Oh I know what it was that I wanted to say. The LotR 'magic' wasn't in it. It's more "action flick with cheesy humour".

Bringing this thread back. :sparkle:

I watched The Act of Killing today.

Basically it's a documentary in which they take Anwar Congo, one of executioners in the Indonesian communist massacre of the 60's that resulted in over half a million deaths, and they give him the means to re-enact his genocide in the form of a Hollywood film. At the start of filming, whenever he visits a place where he once executed people he casually talks about the horrific ways in which he killed them there like it was nothing, and even laughs about it at times. But by the time he completes the film re-enacting his actions, he's so moved by it that he starts to seriously question the things he's done, and now whenever he visits a place in which he tortured people it causes him to vomit in reaction. Fascinating stuff, really makes you think about the power film can have as a medium.

The power of film brings me great pleasure every day.

Sometimes I just look at static images though.

Downloading Riddick (2013) which I had forgotten got released. This is going to be good. Even if the turns out to be bad it'll be okay because Vin Diesel doing what he likes best. Thinking about maybe watching Noah tomorrow.

Just finished watching the backer premiere of Tales of Alethrion, a 20~ minute animated short about a monster hunter . Pretty damn good, first (and only) movie I've backed on Kickstarter. It was delayed a year, but in return it was twice as long so I'm not mad.

Nice hearty animation (though I wish there were a few more in-between frames, but the budget was super tiny so I get why) and I really like the sound direction. The storytelling is great, a bit less intense than their previous work, The Reward, but it was fine as this time around it was romance rather than bromance which was at the heart of the tale.

Highly recommend people who haven't seen The Reward to check it out by the way, if you're a fan of adventure. Know I've linked it before but whatevs.

Not a valid vimeo URL

I'll link Alethrion, which serves as a prequel, once it goes public as well.

Anyway, on the subject of Kickstarter... paying and then waiting 2 years to watch something which provides 20 minutes of entertainment feels stupid in hindsight (+2 minutes if you count searching for my name in the credits as entertainment). Really wish animation wasn't so expensive to produce, both terms of cash money and time.

At least I didn't back Little Witch Academia 2. Wasn't that kickstarter nearly 2 years ago now? And I hear production only started a few months ago.  :owo:

Wait, how did Capcom let them get away with using the Monster Hunter ip?

Little Witch seems acceptable, since Trigger's also been busy making other stuff.

@MJJ: Monster hunter as in some guy who hunts monsters for a living, not related to the game franchise.

@Ky: It is (was) a school project. Not half assed by any means though.

I put on Resident Evil:Afterlife as background noise a few days ago as I worked on a paper.

It was pretty dumb, but I've seen worse. I thought these movies were supposed to be the worst thing ever...?

Saw Age of Ultron last night.

It was pretty good, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and The Vision were pretty cool. Ultron was pretty cool when Whedon wasn't Whedoning all over his dialogue, the movie still doesn't feel quite as epic as it should, a lot of things aren't given the screen time they deserve, and a lot more are clearly setups for the future character films.

But hey, it was fun.

Torture porn with really bad CGI that turns it into a comedy.
