I played a lot in middle school, the last time I played the physical game was right when the set with akroma angel of wrath had just come out

I played 2012 online game and had some fun with it and was doing pretty well too

Would anyone want to play?

And is there a way that does not involve buying Magic Online and then spending a thousand dollars on that?

I got it for free with playstation plus which I no longer have a subscription to

if a way to play the pc version for free exists then yeah I'd be down

I've never played Magic.  :sparkle: Is it difficult?

The basic rules are fairly simple, and as a newbie you wouldn't typically be exposed to anything but easy to understand concepts and ideas.

But you can do some crazy things which just throws the rules out the window and start building new ones. Which is where things can start to seem complex or hard to follow.

(For experienced magic players, see Dredge decks as an example)

I got the 2013 game edit and played it for about a week, learned all the rules and then it just got boring.  :damn:

Yeah sadly the DotPW games don't have anywhere close to all the cards and complexity of the paper card version.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 07:15:25 AM
Yeah it was boring, hardly any customizion and repeated game play, I guess it would have been fun if I had people to play with. But >friends.  :plz:

So is Ming-sama pro in MTG and collects cards irl? :yay:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 07:58:38 AM
Was the best player on campus when I was a student! (as evidenced by several tournaments)

I have a lot of cards IRL, but I sold all my really good stuff for a nice chunk of money since there's nobody to play with where I live now.

 :sad2:

Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 09:02:58 AM
Wow ming the local MTG geek.
Did you win stuff in the tournaments? I remember once joining a yugioh tournament haha.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 09:11:17 AM
Oh just booster packs, or free drafting (a system in which everyone takes turns picking cards from boosters to make improvised decks, then duke it out in a tiny tournament to decide in what order people get to pick the good cards that were opened to keep as their own)

Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 09:32:41 AM
So nothing major, still nice! Were you well known for being a nerd at MTG? :smile2:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 09:44:21 AM
On campus? Yes, everyone who played knew who I was. I helped introduce a lot people and helped them out with cards, and even assisted in running events  :yay:

The college was primarily game development and research people, students or not, so a lot of us played things like board, card, and roleplaying games and no one got hassled for being a geek, in fact it was pretty normal. It was a paradise for nerds  :kyaa:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 10:04:55 AM
Heh, did you introduce new people to the game and then later beat their ass in tournements?

Oh yeah, I should have thought thats how game development schools are, it really does sound fun, nerdy things is something I've always been interested in. But like you said, theres really no opportunity or future in it.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 10:36:00 AM
I tried to be nice to the newbies and keep away from them when they wanted to have their own tournaments and stuff without having to deal with us more experienced players.

And I had 'weird, not very strong, but fun' decks that I would use when playing against them normally. So they'd have a chance + I could have some fun too!
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 11:46:06 AM
Ming is a nice bully guy. :hihi: :tea:

Do you still play MTG?
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 11:49:08 AM
Nah, there's nobody to play with here.

There's a proper online version, but you have to buy and collect cards just like you would in real life, with real money too.

 :sad2:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 12:15:18 PM
Might be because you dont go outside :tch:

Damn theres no way to get cards without using money?! Also have you played anyother card games?
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 12:38:59 PM
Naw I tried asking around in a few circles. But everyone just told me that community died here long ago.   :tears:
There are (not very legal) ways to play for free online, but I haven't really tried them. I want to be able to see my opponents face as I crush him

I played Pokemon as a kid, and some Digimon and Harry Potter, which never managed to catch on but I had some fun with them. Oh and I tried some Yugioh because my brother really wanted to play (he played with friends at school too). I just had some starter deck. I got destroyed.

Damn

I want to be able to see my opponents face as I crush him

That's pretty rude! I bet you would laugh in their face too   :sweatdrop:

Also there was harry potter card game? How could I have missed out on that.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 01:38:15 PM
I would thank them for a game well played, and look forward to the next match. That is all~

As for HP, it came out in 2001 I think, and then never got any expansions. you'd be a bit young to have played it
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 02:34:32 PM
You wouldnt even shake hands with them? How bad manners  :lazy:

Wow, I was 5 back then, I'm sure I could play it and still beat you!
Have you tried Heartstone?
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 02:45:55 PM
Hah, that's funny because I always did shake hands with people.

Once I went for a hug.

Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 03:10:37 PM
You went for one? What happened, did you not get to hug the person ?  :gloom:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 03:18:11 PM
I did get to. Maybe it was worded poorly. Guy was a good friend I respected a lot, and did not expect to beat. It was the final match too of a tournament, and everyone (20+ people) were watching. It was a very nerdy bromance moment.

I miss those easy going days.

Post by: Ming on September 23, 2014, 06:21:36 PM
'kay. If we ever meet up to go shopping or whatever, I'll give you one.

On topic: I forgot to answer before but no, I have not played Hearthstone, I was interested, but it seems to not have the complexity and variety I want in a card game, not yet anyway.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Gropy on September 23, 2014, 06:36:51 PM
S-sounds nice  I might give you someting different tho

Yeah heartstone is a casually game when it comes to that, most people in my class plays it but I can't get into it. For me I don't think it's variety, theres just something about it I dont like. Anyway so you don't play any card games right now?
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering

Not right now, there are some digital ones on steam I have some interest in, but I don't feel like grinding for cards and such right now.

(And I know how easily I would be swayed to start buying packs and stuff...)

Something different huh  :sing:

Unfortunately, I don't think many online TCGs are can have the amazing complexity MTG does, at least not yet.

Totally sad, really. ;-;

Yup, no good card games right now  I should probably just get into heartstone.

y-yeah, but it's embarrasing to say what ;w;

"no good card games right now"

Maybe I should try making a digital one. Don't need no fancy art or sound until after you have something that works.

Oh yeah, that is always a possibility ! But I think it requires alot of work. If you ever get time you should do it.   :yay:
I would give your a try maybe.  :sparkle:
Did you ever play the pokemon cardgames?
 :tsundere:

Haha did you also actually play the game? Pokeman TCG was more of a thing to collect and look at in my generaction people didnt play it. We always made fun of the kid with the chinese fakes.
 :vsign: :tehe:

Post by: Ming on September 24, 2014, 12:52:58 PM
The majority definitely only collected, but we were a lot who played too.

We had the second largest Pokemon TCG club in Sweden here actually.  :sing:

Post by: Gropy on September 24, 2014, 01:53:40 PM
Damn, I never even learned how to play it, I just remember those energy cards being annoying as fuck to get because you just wanted the pretty pokemons. Second largest? Did you also play pokemon tournaments? Or are you just saying it because you were a bunch of nerds with a lot of cards?

 :loli:
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on September 24, 2014, 02:08:23 PM
Yup second largest, biggest was in Stockholm. There were no tournaments back then, other than nationals and worlds. (I wanted to the nationals and compete bit my dad couldn't drive me because of work  )

Shame you never played, it was a lot of fun!

I was interested into this a long time, still regret denying some good 80's sci-fi books for a deck (that we didn't even buy).
First actual deck (pre-made) was a japanese-themed red-black kamigawa deck, playing against my little brothers was really fun. Then we decided to make our own decks and it sucked because none of us were magic-pro and knew what the fuck we were doing, my blue-only deck sucked and I didn't win once.  They, on the other hand, went to one of those tabletop shops and mingled with magic-neckbeards that aggressively insulted them for their shit taste, some were nice enough to gift them a shitty card or two and one guy helped their friend (of the same age) build an uber-powerful deck, so it wasn't that bad for them.
And this is what puts me off about this game, if it weren't tabletop people would be complaining about how pay2win it is (this is applicable to any TCG tbh), and the way you have to autistically know what every card does, have a collection of super-cool 50-dollars-each cards is bleh.

Me and my friend used tabletop simulator, but it was hard as we didn't know the rules exactly and tapping the cards was painful (seriously, you have to keep pressed the left mouse button and keep moving the middle wheel for ages until it bends at a satisfying angle). So, with some searching around we got this, as far as I know it's the ultimate magic game, with almost all the cards, observance of the rules and even a working AI that can build its' own decks, so if anyone of you wants to try...

Anyone played any Khans/Fate? I played a bit of Khans in a draft, where I pulled a Sorin  :omg: but haven't had the chance to play much since then.

Well, my attempt to revive the thread clearly failed.

To be on topic, I'm currently attempting to put together a standard deck with no Fate or Dragons cards, because I'm poor and stupid.
Title: Re: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: Ming on May 08, 2015, 06:45:29 PM
I don't play anymore so I can't comment on standard, not that I ever cared much for the format.

I can't stand the idea of something I like rotating out and becoming illegal to play, not to mention the baby sized card pool to build from in the first place. Give me modern or give me kitchen table casual.

:hihi:

Well, here's a former standard deck I've had kicking around for a while that I've added random stuff to for casual games, and have considered converting into a modern deck, since it's the deck I seem to do the best with.
