manganime thread
« on: August 20, 2014, 02:38:00 PM »

I just gulped down all of osamu tezuka's "buddha" in the short span of 2 days, I think it's a good account of his life/the situation at the time, but the way his teachings were presented was a bit confusing. Maybe I'm coming from a western standpoint, but the work had a certain jesus-y/hippie-ish vibe among other things.

What have you been reading/watching?

Got myself a torrent of all the Berserk Dark Horse volume scans (High quality as opposed to scans made with a potato and translated by a group of monkeys on typewriters).

'Dis gun be good!

(And yes, I have a mild obsession with that series. It speaks to me on a nearly spiritual level  )

Because of tezuka's work, I decided to watch saint young men.
It's funny, best parts are the ones with the yakuza and self-sacrificing birds.
It sounds blasphermous, but jesus was pretty cute in this one (I rarely get feelings for anime males), in general this is a blasphermous way to go at it actually, but it's made in such a kindhearted and nice fashion that I didn't notice it at all.

Saint Young Men is amazing. How many OVAs are there now? I've only seen two (but also read the manga ages ago)

even after reading buddha and phoenix, apollo's song is still my favorite work from him. you get a little taste of everything in that manga. plus I found the MC the most relatable out of any of his works, and he sacrifices dumb sentimentality to get a solid message across.

I liked uchouten kazoku a lot when it was airing, I always looked forward to it more than anything else that season.

Did that series ever end or is it still on hiatus?  :poh:

Just finished part 3 of JoJo. It was wayyy too long and the Dio fight was too short considering how many other useless and dumb battles there were. I was expecting a lot more Dio considering how big of a role he had in part 1. Despite the protags getting a lot of time there really wasn't much development at all. Joseph didn't really feel like Joseph, it was weird. I liked Part 2 in almost every way; it was concise, had amazing battles, Caesar, and awesome villains. Part 3 just had too many villains and most of them were forgettable. Going to start part 4 now.
