Series might not be for you if you fell alseep after just 20 minutes
Shiki isn't a doll. It's a (magic) prosthetic arm. Officially I don't think Shiki has a job, Mikiya however, who doesn't get a lot of time in the first movie, is Toko's secretary. She runs a design/art company. They all do detective work unofficially though, and that's the side of things which the movies revolve around along with Mikiya and Shikis relationship and history.
If you want to keep watching the series, keep in mind 1) it doesn't follow a chronological order and 2) it's a mystery and paranormal series, it's going to be slow, action happens mostly towards the end of each movie, and things aren't going to make a whole lot of sense some of the time (depending on your preexisting knowledge of the Nasuverse or the things that it draws upon).
Also Mikiya and Shiki aren't for everyone. You either relate to them a lot, or not much at all.
