Title: Old Skool
Post by: McJongJing on April 24, 2015, 09:17:20 AM
What old anime are you watching?
I just watched Otaku no Video for the first time.
I think it might be my favorite work of gainax.
It's like a time capsule of otaku culture.
I really enjoyed the interviews.
Whilst some of them were depressing, I think there's a beauty to that passion.
Does anyone know where they got their statistics from?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the only current series I'm watching. Everything else that I'm watching is 70s and 80s.

Whilst some of them were depressing, I think there's a beauty to that passion.

Assuming you mean the live action interviews, that's the joke. Those were all Gainax employees.

Does that include the white guy?
What about the cel thief? Was that bit staged?
Gainax can't allow gaijin filth to work there.

It's a mockumentary so I'd assume so.

I did the same thing.
Did you watch 0079 first?
I'm watching through the 0079 movies before I give Zeta a second shot.

I just watched Daicon III and IV for the first time.
Really impressive for amateur work.
It's a shame we don't get that sort of thing much more these days.

III was whatever, but IV was great.

You should watch Honneamise next if you haven't since it was their first real production with the all star Gainax lineup and an 800 million yen budget behind them. Needless to say it's a stunning piece of animation.

I'll check Onneamise out sometime.
I thought III was great amateur work considering their staff constraints and budget.
There's some really interesting memoirs from one of the guys who worked on DAICON III

I watched some more episodes of 0079, it's kind of growing on me I guess. But Char is still the highlight of each episode.

I just saw MD Geist.
It was fucking rad.
The animation was surprisingly great for such a trashy ova.

I just saw Genocyber as well.
The first and third episodes were great.
The gore was really detailed and creepy.
I like how they actually animated the tendons snapping as the nurses head falls off.
And the way they spliced in real footage was also super neat.
The ship was really creepy after it gets covered in guts.
The mechanical designs of the two cyborgs were fucking awesome.

Episodes 4 and 5 are so boring though.
I just wanted to see mindless violence. But instead we followed some couple no one cares about.

Anyone know any other good ultra violence OVAs?

Genocyber looks interesting. Did you watch it dubbed?
Title: Re: Old Skool
Post by: McJongJing on May 25, 2015, 05:06:08 PM
Yeah. It's pretty goofy, but the swearing works well for it.
The great thing about Genocyber is that it doesn't pull punches.
Other shows would have cut away from kids getting shredded by machine guns, but not Genocyber.
A lot of the violence feels a bit silly though. Like the detective in the hospital.

Out of curiosity, what would you say that the 'cutoff date' for an anime to be considered old would be?
Haruhi is almost ten years old, but it still looks quite modern.
I don't think that we'll ever be able to think of anime produced in the 2000s as being 'retro' because of the huge difference in visuals between the digital and hand animation.

I think it's when there's a notable visual difference.

Anime adopted its current look sometime in the mid 2000s. Ones produced in the earlier years of the decade tend to have more limited movemebt, a more angular style, more sticking to certain things that eventually became cliche, and tended to have a somewhat washed out appearance.

Has anyone else seen Neo Tokyo?
I chanced upon it tonight because the name looked cool.
It's a trilogy of abstract short films.
It's really great too. Some of the most fluid animation I've seen in a long time.
How come no one ever mentions it?

Yeah that's a really good point. I don't think 2000s anime will ever really be considered retro until the next big graphical shift.
Maybe if anime moves towards cgi animation more.

Almost like they cherry picked the best bits to PROMOTE those shows or something

Is there any anime with better animation than DYRL?

Has anyone else seen Robot Carnival?
It's a collection of 9 short films from the 80s.
They got a bunch of famous anime directors together and said, "Here's a huge budget. Make whatever, so long as it has robots"
And the 80s sound track is fantastic.

This short is super cute

Stop forgetting.
You gotta watch Robot Carnival as a per-requisite to joining the elite oldskool fans.
Don't you wanna hang out with the cool kids?

0079's American run was my first anime I got into. I don't need a pre-requisite, bub.

What was your favorite short?
I really liked the one where the guy builds his own robot girlfriend.
Is it ethical to build your own artificial intelligence?
Nah, guy was a dick.

I also really liked 'A Tale of Two Robots', the Imperial Japan propaganda one.
