Original Works

Post finished or WIP stuff you've done!

https://soundcloud.com/ollistarmusic/thechip1 I just dropped the first track of a series that will eventually be the soundtrack to a cheesy over the top cyberpunk buddy cop-esque film (with data smugglers instead of cops) my friends and I will be making.

Very tasty.

I'm going to tie you up and throw you into a basement one day and force you to make music for my shitty games.

I've begun to make music for my game.
But it doesn't sound very good, since I'm trying to learn from scratch.
Do you have any advice?

Well first off, what's your musical background like?

Are you asking what experience I've had with music before?
Almost none. I sang in the male choir in highschool, and that was it.

Like I said, I'm learning from scratch.

Okay, well for starters you'll want to learn piano since that's what most programs are gunna be based around. You don't have to be great at playing it by any means but at least know what keys are what notes. (sidenote: What program are you using/planning to use?)

Also you should definitely learn some music theory. Again, you don't have to be Igor Stravinsky or anything but knowing scales, how chords work, and even stuff like relative majors and minors will only help you. I'm sure your local uni or community college has a basic theory or something of the sort, if you're attending school. There's also PLENTY of info online if you're not enrolled somewhere or would just rather give a little extra effort to avoid some cost.

Best of luck my up and coming musical kiwi!  :yay:

Thank you.
I'm using Fl Studio. It's surprisingly easy to use.
Amd yeah, actually learning musical theory would probably help.

Right on! FL is what I use. I'm thinking of giving Ableton a try sometime though since it's the "hip" new thing.

And yes, theory is key. A lot of people seem to overlook it but having lot's of music ideas doesn't do much if you don't know your basics.

I recently started learning FM synthesis so my synths sound way nicer than they used to. http://puu.sh/g5JsI/b2f875bcbe.mp3 here's something I threw together when I first started getting the hang of FM, made all the synths from scratch.

Anyone have any pro tips for how to just like pick up the pen and draw

I really like drawing, but when you're trying to get better instead of drawing for the joy of it, it's difficult, especially when watching shows or playing games is so simple and easy...
