Since you asked, I became rather nearsighted before I was two years old and my vision steadily worsened through childhood. I was put into a study to see if they could slow the progression by resting the eyes, which entailed dilating my eyes every night and only reading large print. I wore bifocals. I always sat in the front row in class. What textbooks were not available in large type had to be read with a magnifier. It was several years of elementary school hell. To make it worse, the study concluded that it made no difference.
BTW, I didn't know about the heredity of your eye condition. I guess that girls would have a chance for it if their father has it and their mother is a carrier who doesn't express it, assuming simple heredity. They'd be born with it if both parents expressed the trait. Then, not all genetics is that simple.
