Title: manganime thread
Post by: schizotypal on August 20, 2014, 02:38:00 PM

I just gulped down all of osamu tezuka's "buddha" in the short span of 2 days, I think it's a good account of his life/the situation at the time, but the way his teachings were presented was a bit confusing. Maybe I'm coming from a western standpoint, but the work had a certain jesus-y/hippie-ish vibe among other things.

What have you been reading/watching?

Got myself a torrent of all the Berserk Dark Horse volume scans (High quality as opposed to scans made with a potato and translated by a group of monkeys on typewriters).

'Dis gun be good!

(And yes, I have a mild obsession with that series. It speaks to me on a nearly spiritual level  )

Because of tezuka's work, I decided to watch saint young men.
It's funny, best parts are the ones with the yakuza and self-sacrificing birds.
It sounds blasphermous, but jesus was pretty cute in this one (I rarely get feelings for anime males), in general this is a blasphermous way to go at it actually, but it's made in such a kindhearted and nice fashion that I didn't notice it at all.
I'm a bad christian :badsmoke:

Saint Young Men is amazing. How many OVAs are there now? I've only seen two (but also read the manga ages ago)

even after reading buddha and phoenix, apollo's song is still my favorite work from him. you get a little taste of everything in that manga. plus I found the MC the most relatable out of any of his works, and he sacrifices dumb sentimentality to get a solid message across.

Just finished part 3 of JoJo. It was wayyy too long and the Dio fight was too short considering how many other useless and dumb battles there were. I was expecting a lot more Dio considering how big of a role he had in part 1. Despite the protags getting a lot of time there really wasn't much development at all. Joseph didn't really feel like Joseph, it was weird. I liked Part 2 in almost every way; it was concise, had amazing battles, Caesar, and awesome villains. Part 3 just had too many villains and most of them were forgettable. Going to start part 4 now.

Post by: bubblecat on May 05, 2015, 06:42:45 PM
I think everyone should experience YKK at least once. Every page evokes a very gentle feeling in the reader. The Japanese describe that style as "mono no aware" which is a sort of defined as a wistful feeling toward the passing of time.

It's wonderful, yo. :sad2:

At least it isn't clamp

Some of their art is good and I do enjoy xxxHolic for example, but those inconsistent proportions  and bouts of QUALITY man. Wish I still had my folder to post examples.

Oh my god

I was nostalgic for a manga that stopped being scanlated ages ago, so I opened it in a tab last night so I'd remember to re-read it today

I just finished but, to my surprise, there was one more chapter, one that I'd never seen before!

After reading it, holding back tears of joy of having had some more, and tears of sadness because there will never be any more than this, I decided to check the upload date

AND IT'S ONE HOUR AGO

PROJECT LITERALLY _JUST_ GOT RESSURECTED AS I WAS READING

I WANT TO THANK THE SCANLATION TEAM (MANGA SYNDROME), AND EVERY GOD ON MOUNT OLYMPUS FOR GIVING ME THIS WORTHY GIFT

I don't read yaoi if that's what you mean. I've tried a few but usually it's crap and not worth my time.

The manga is 34-sai Mushoku-san (Ms. Unemployed 34-year old)

It's a slice of life. Most of it is in monologue.

A (murder) mystery manga I've been following for some time, came to an end. It was beautiful all the way through.

 :sad2:

It's called Yuureitou (The Ghost Tower) and it's about two young Japanese men in the 1950s who try to solve the mysteries surrounding a clock tower and the murderer who dwells within, to find the enormous treasure hidden deep inside, behind a labyrinth of deadly traps.

Quite an adventure and it deals a fair bit with building the trust and friendship between the two protagonists and character development has a front seat. It features gender bending very prominently, in a good way too, and not as a gag or gimmick, but as an integral part of characters and for advancing the story.

It might have beaten Berserk as my number one manga of all time, only this being of the mystery genre, it doesn't lend itself to repeated readings that much since the mystery is gone, while I've lost count on how many times I've re-read Berserk, partially and in its entirety, for the atmosphere, art and action.

I give it 10 out of 10. There's nothing about it that I would have wanted to see done differently in terms of tone, twists, the mysteries and riddles, plot and characters, and even the art and pacing is spot on.
