Title: Magic Duels - WotC finally decides to compete with Hearthstone
Post by: Ming on July 21, 2015, 05:05:18 PM
So I just found out this game is happening. Magic Duels is pretty much free to play Duels of the Planeswalkers, but they intend to update this game with all future card sets instead of releasing a new game each year.

And probably past sets too so you can play formats like Modern, Legacy and Vintage. Guessing they want to replace Magic Online which is like what, 13 years old?

You get new cards by buying randomized booster packs just like in real life. You buy them with gold, which can be earned by playing the game, or buy using your lovely credit card.

It's coming out to every platform including phones, and as far as I can tell, launches with the coming summer card set, Origins.

All I can say is, ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

Eh, I dunno, when I could be getting physical cards. Especially when cockatrice exists.

I have nowhere to play the physical game so this is great news for me. (Also, it's incredibly expensive)

I didn't like cockatrice when I tried it. Too clunky, and no match making.

Well

I played through the tutorial, interface is a bit sluggish but not too bad

Overall it's magic as expected, but... the card pool is small. Very small. You just get access to the latest set, Magic Origins, and a few more cards from Magic's history I don't think are in Origins or they're doing some very weird reprints.

So far as deck building options go at a glance, it's not very exciting, so the game won't hold my interest for very long, but I'll mess around with it at least a little bit. And who knows, after a years worth of set releases, it might be more interesting since it'll be like IRL standard at that point.

monitoring this very closely. I hope they give magic online player a way to keep their card and transfer to the game.

I made a deck that I'm kinda happy with, considering the cards I have, and I'm actually having fun with the game now

Still not confident to go online though, I'd probably get my butt kicked by some 13 year old who used his mom's credit card to buy like, 200 boosters and now has 4 of all the powerful cards

Edit: The deck I made is a simple red/white deck with a focus on cheap creatures with a synergy for cheap enchantments to create a not too shabby fighting force quickly.

Been trying elves out but.. they suck!

There's not even a single mana dork, elf or otherwise

It's sooo slow! I miss my legacy elves

Made a red/black deck. Now I'm pissed off because of all the cards I know it needs (a few Gravecrawlers would be a good start) but probably aren't in the game.

Yup. Just the latest set, Magic Origins and then some random extras from magic's past to make things KINDA SORTA BUT NOT REALLY work.

There's some cards missing from Origins though, I'm not sure why but I guess it's because they might create some weird meta or whatever since it's just one set on its own right now until Battle for Zendikar releases.

What I didn't realize at first, is... there's card restrictions.

You can only have 4 of each common, 3 of each uncommon, 2 of each rare and 1 of each mythic.

Decks feel really low level as a result but I guess it also narrows the gap between veterans and newbies.

What IS awesome though, is that boosters will not contain cards you already have a full 'set' off.

But I really hope this stupid card restriction is lifted eventually, especially when it has all the 'standard' sets in a year's time.

Still, really having fun with this. If anyone wants to fight it out just scream in my general direction

(There's two headed giant too for co-op~)

I might.

Reminder that Cockatrice has no such restrictions

I battled Scumbag, he's got a sort of a red/black, sacrifice and ping deck going on.

He sadly lost some of his cards (the 3 free boosters you get at the start) because, I'm assuming, some sort of database rollback or storing failure.

Seems a bit shaky to play the game now. Personally I haven't had any issues though (14 hours playtime so far)

I'll fight ya

I have four decks (so far!). 1 blue/white that I made after I finished the tutorial and haven't tweaked since because I made it with that TERRIBLE deck wizard tool.

A copy of the same deck that embraced enchantments more.

A red/white which I made after I realized blue wasn't very good in this game. Went full on enchantments this time. It works much better and I've tweaked the mana curve to near perfection, uses a lot of booster cards too so might not be a fair fight for people.

And green elves, tried splashing black and white but neither feels right  :damn:

It either gets a perfect hand or it's just an endless stream of useless 1/1s (or land) and needs a lot of more work

I put in a request for a password reset so I could actually submit a fucking support ticket. Been 4 days so far. Nothing.

Oh dear.
